Sukra moves up to T3, Subash T33 after second round in Haryana
KATHMANDU, April 22: Nepal’s Sukra Bahadur Rai surged into title contention, while Subash Tamang also made a steady climb after the second round of the DP World PGTI Players Championship at the Classic Golf and Country Club in Gurugram, Haryana on Wednesday.
Sukra produced a brilliant 6-under 66 in the second round to move up to tied third from overnight T14 with a 36-hole total of 8-under 136.
Starting from the 10th tee, he was in fine rhythm early on the front nine, carding four birdies on the 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th and 17th holes against a lone bogey on the 11th for a 2-under 34.
He continued the momentum on the back nine with birdies on the first, third and ninth holes against a bogey on the fifth, eventually signing for another 2-under 34 to stay firmly in the hunt.
Subash Tamang also improved his position, moving up four spots to tied 33rd at 2-under 142 after a round 2-under 70. Beginning his round from the 10th tee, Subash carded a 1-under 35 on the front side with birdies on the 10th, 15th and 18th holes, offset by bogeys on the 11th and 12th. He added another 1-under 35 on the back nine, mixing birdies on the third, fourth and sixth holes with bogeys on the first and fifth.
At the top of the leaderboard, India’s Dhruv Sheoran and Akshay Sharma shared the lead at 9-under 135. Akshay fired a superb 7-under 65, while Dhruv carded a 6-under 66. Sukra is joined in tied third by India’s Sunit Chowrasia and Taiga Tanaka, while seven players are bunched in tied sixth at 7-under 137, setting up an exciting battle over the final two rounds.
The DP World PGTI event carries a cash purse of INR 1 Crore.
