Finnmark Surf

Bàtni means tooth in Northern Sámi.

It wasn't an easy wave to find. It's not an easy wave to reach during winter. And it's certainly not an easy stretch of ocean to predict.

Back in 2020, Bàtni was one of the signs that convinced me to keep moving forward with this surf guiding project called Finnmark Surf.

The goal was never to feed egos—neither my own nor anyone else's. The idea was much simpler: if we had both high-performance waves and more accessible waves, maybe the local community could not only learn to surf, but truly improve. Maybe surfing could become another way to spend time outdoors here; another sport connecting nature, movement, and personal growth. Perhaps that makes more sense if you live here year-round.

Lately, I feel that Bàtni is about to lose some of its innocence. And the truth is that I still haven't managed to teach local youngsters to truly master it. In many ways, I haven't achieved the goals I originally set for myself.

Maybe it's just a matter of time.

Either way, I won't give up.

For me, these coastlines are more than waves. They are vital gears in the engine that keeps me moving.

With his camera, Diego Borges is preparing a documentary about Finnmark Surf, made straight from the heart.
The living legend Joackim Guichard has already experienced this new kind of surf retreat, deep in the raw and beautiful Arctic tundra, in one of the most remote areas of mainland Europe.
We stay focused on building community in Varanger.
There is still so much to do.
