How Eric Arakawa and Andy Irons Captured the Soul of the 2000s
The iconic "Rising Sun" surfboard design was created as a signature aesthetic for three-time world champion Andy Irons during his dominant era in the early-to-mid 2000s, crafted through his close partnership with legendary Hawaiian shaper Eric Arakawa.
To core surfing, this specific era represents the absolute pinnacle of the sport—a time before hyper-commercialization, when heavy surf culture was defined by raw authenticity, fierce rivalries, and unmatched passion. Andy Irons was the ultimate anti-hero and the "People’s Champ," whose visceral, unapologetic approach counterbalanced the clean, calculated perfection dominant on tour. Driven by Irons’ aggressive style, Arakawa tailored high-performance surfboards—such as the famous 6'6" pin-tail used to clinch the 2003 World Title at Pipeline—while the bold, radiating red-and-white sun design became synonymous with Irons’ competitive fire.
A standout canvas for this striking graphic was the Arakawa AI Bandit, a highly responsive shortboard model that Irons famously ordered every single year while competing on tour. Engineered as a fast, agile "go-kart" of a surfboard, the Bandit combined a relaxed rocker and a single-to-double concave bottom, allowing Irons to tear through small-to-medium conditions with tight arcs and effortless flow. Initially popularized through a signature Billabong apparel and board crossover line, the artwork and the Bandit shape came to symbolize the height of professional surf culture and Irons' raw persona.
For the core community, this design transcends mere branding. It represents Hawaii’s North Shore dominance, the golden age of the Irons-Slater rivalry, and the timeless legacy of a champion who rode purely from the heart. Decades later, the design remains incredibly influential as a tribute to the late surfer's legacy; in fact, Arakawa Surfboards ultimately pulled Irons' original Bandit out of the family attic to completely recreate and re-release the master shape for modern purists.
