The last few days there have been Orcas (100+) feeding on Herring everywhere around Skjervøy! 🖤🤍🇳🇴

As the days grow shorter and the sun spends more and more time around the horizon, golden hour becomes golden 3 or 4 hours! Epic light for enjoying these incredible creatures and the stunning scenery! 🗻🌅

And so….the season has started with a bang here in Skjervøy, Arctic Norway. 🥳🇳🇴

The Herring have entered Kvaenangen fjord once again and the Killer whales, Humpbacks and Fin whales have followed.🖤🤍🐋🇳🇴

Today’s trip with Steve Truluck At Sea started off with the usual excitement of spotting an orca not far from Skjervøy harbour. Excitement quickly turned into sadness though as we soon realised that we had found a dead orca 😭

Phonecalls were made to try to get the body recovered so that this beautiful animal’s death isn’t wasted. Hopefully we can learn how he/she died by performing a necropsy.

The body looked fresh with no obvious signs of the cause of death. The animal was approximately 6m long and it looked like a female, but is possibly a young male. It was still fairly dark at 10.05am and with the body floating on its side it was impossible to see the dorsal fin in the waves to get ID photos.

Every effort is being made by us to try to recover the body to handover to Norwegian Orca Survey so that a necropsy can be performed.🙏
