Absolutely boss summer climbing mountains in Switzerland 🇨🇭

Guiding for Frost Guiding based in Evolène.

Alpinism can be an intense and powerful experience, and it’s something I’m proud and privileged to be able to do.

I’ll let the pictures do the talking. They’re are just momentary snaps from tens of hours and thousands of meters climbing and I hope you like them.

Taking a moment after an amazing summer in the alpine mountains of Switzerland to pause in Font. A place that’s so tranquil and feels like home. The textures, movement, and rounded top-outs bring the mind back to simple thoughts and away from early hut breakfasts, weather forecasts, hot glaciers, and rockfall. Font, like many places this summer have suffered for fires, out of control and threatening homes and ancient woodlands, hopefully that’s it for this year, and we can manage it better next year. Time to go home.

Five days flew by delivering part 1 of the British Mountain Guides () Rock Training in North Wales. Managed to snap 6 photos, here they are, pretty rough I know, but forgive me I was busy! Great fun working on these courses, trying to keep up with experienced climbers and alpinists starting their guiding career. Working with mates and was a pleasure, both instrumental in my own guides training. Weather held out most of the week, and we saved Friday for rescue training 😜. Every Spring John likes to visit North Wales, when it’s icy cold, windy, and ideally showery rain to go rock climbing. He absolutely loves it! No mention of cold fingers, or “this would be lovely if was warm like Summer”, no mention at all 😜 He does, as always give it maximum beans, fully tests himself, and seeks for improvements, ready for the climbing season ahead. Thankfully the sun did show its face once or twice so I snapped a photo for proof. Again a total pleasure and inspiration.

Great head-up about nesting Peregrines at Tremadog by the BMC. Right hand Vector Buttress / Left hand Shadrach Buttress (where The Snake and Grim Wall etc climb). By “keep disturbance to a minimum” I think the BMC means just don’t climb there until they’ve left. There’s plenty of other great climbs in the area and that abseil is far from essential.

A dolerite crag with quite a lot of history. Owned and managed by the BMC, the crag contains some of the very best outcrop climbing anywhere, mainly multi pitch and all grades from V.Diff to E7. The name in Welsh means 'The Crag of the Pass of the Pigs'

Luke and Mike’s annual pilgrimage to Aurland for ice climbing. This is the fourth year on the trot we’ve climbed together with . As always with ice, every year it forms differently, and we enjoy exploring the area more and sniffing out the stellar lines, sometimes even climbing new routes.
This year was no exception, the cold snap before they arrived opened up some of the lower level ice they’d not seen before, then rising temperatures forced a venue change so we day-tripped to the higher area of Hemsedal (1hr15 away) to keep the mercury below zero. A bonus for us all was that friends from home in Wales .barclay and shared our cabin for the week, so we had a great social in the evening, and some braved a swim in the fjord.

Derek and Andy bringing the Scottish holiday vibes to Aurland! They come every year with Paul and Rob aka The Falkirk Mafia. Every year they get better at ice climbing, technique tuned and more familiar each year, that little extra confidence kept over from the year before. It’s great to see the progress.
On top of that, almost every moment is surreal and hilarious. See you next year!

Great to be back out ice climbing with Abdul after a couple of years. Last time we climbed together was in Aurland where we tick stacks of the classics in the area. Last year Abdul was climbing with Donald in Hemsedal and managed to climb many of the gems in that area too! So this year we warmed up on some of the remaining routes local to Hemsedal that Abdul hadn’t done, then we started branching out a little to explore some of the less frequented areas further afield. Psyche is high with Abdul, with a week of ice and a week of alpinism each year, and endless training in between, he really makes the most of it, enjoying the local skiing on his rest days.
We were reflecting last night that each day had felt special for one reason or another, but our stand out day was climbing on Seltunfossen over in the Lærdal valley.
