Our Dags Solstad-themed Oslo Cycling Week open ride, September 2nd. Romsås is one of Oslo’s most distinctive satellite towns and an unlikely literary landmark. Built by OBOS in the early 1970s, it was designed to fix the mistakes of earlier housing projects: cars pushed to the edges, homes and schools linked by car-free paths through the forest, with a metro station blasted straight into the mountain.
But Romsås also became a symbol of everything critics said had gone wrong with the social-democratic dream. Dag Solstad’s 1984 novel «Forsøk på å beskrive det ugjennomtrengelige» painted it as empty, alienating, impenetrable, sparking pushback from residents who said their community was nothing like that. Today Romsås holds both challenges, but also a tight-knit neighborhood unlike anywhere else in Oslo.
