INFO ABOUT GREENLAND ICECAP

Greenland's ice cap creates enormous glaciers, which under the influence of the force of gravity are forced out towards the coasts. Here the ice breaks off and forms the icebergs that are one of Greenland's major natural attractions. The ice's total area of 1.8 million km² (695,000 square miles) corresponds to 14 times the size of England. The ice-free area amounts to 350,000 km² (135,000 square miles) - equivalent to the area of Germany. The ice cap has covered large parts of Greenland for the last 2-3 million years, but active glaciers and constant melting have meant that the ice has been recycled many times. The aging ice sheet is only a few metres thick at the ice fringe, but more than 3,200 metres thick at its highest point. The ice contains 10 per cent of the world's reserves of fresh water as well as atmospheric particles which scientists can use to gain an insight into the climate of both Greenland and the Earth going back some 250,000 years. The 2026 Whitehorizon expedition is officially over. All participants both on the ice cap and 'back offices' are safely back where they belong. Looking at the progress on the track it all went smoothly, however behind the scenes things were happening. The diversion to DYE 2 was a result of wind conditions developing. Fighting up-wind with fully loaded pulks is not ideal, better to enjoy some nice downwind looping. And as a bonus James got to enjoy DYE 2 before deciding to return to Kangar with Haakon. Heading North were Mari, Chris and Camilla who really got to enjoy the Ice Cap on its best terms. It all went smooth until Camp 10, then the weather office went 'off line'! Some 'emergency plumbing' (stent) was urgently needed, but not available on the island. Luckily it got fixed by a ferry trip and a welcoming hospital at he mainland, but the team was without their normal forecast for a few days until I came back around camp 18. Most important we got them down to the Bowdon fjord and to Quaanaq safe and sound. Thank you all fore following us on another epic Whitehorizon expedition.

Camp 20, the end of what I believe has been one of the fastest Kangar-DYE 2- Quaanaq trips in history. And not quite without incidents both on the ice and off ice. amp20-Sea ice!We did it!Kited down 40km in snow and whiteout, then then sun came out just as rebreather the top of the mountains into Bowdoin fjord.Hiken out for 7km, and worked our way down «hell hill»- little snow this year but we all got down in one piece! Happy crew with stunning views waiting for a sled ride out tmrw.

They seems to be on the move, but might be a bit slow. Camilla reported 35 cm snowfall last night!
