🇨🇭 World Cup #1 2026 Switzerland: Sprint Season Starts in Locarno

The 2026 Orienteering World Cup begins in Locarno and Ascona with a pure sprint programme that promises speed, pressure, and demanding decision-making from the very first race. In this article, we analyse the urban character of the Swiss venue and present a simulated leg where route choice is shaped not only by distance, but also by flow, cognitive load, and the ability to read ahead under pressure....

Huge congratulations to Filipa Rodrigues 👏🔥

In the last two weeks, she has delivered two outstanding performances and two big personal bests.

1:17:40 in the Half Marathon in Amsterdam, going clearly under the sub 1:18 goal 🏃‍♀️ 35:39 in the 10k at Premiärmilen, also breaking the sub 36 barrier 💥

A fantastic reward for all the dedication, sacrifice, and hard work behind the scenes. What makes it even more impressive is that Filipa combines full-time work with high-level training and competition. That takes real commitment.

We have been working together since 2022, and it has been great to see her progress step by step. Results like these do not happen by chance. They are built with consistency, patience, and determination.

Very proud of you, Filipa 🙌 Your attitude is a powerful example and an inspiration for many athletes chasing ambitious goals.

Congratulations, and let’s keep moving forward 🚀

Inside the Runner’s Mind: Technical Breakdown with H. Lilleström

Technical ex*****on is one of the key factors behind performance in orienteering. For both athletes and coaches, analysing ex*****on in detail is essential to identify recurring patterns under competition pressure. Some of these patterns reflect solid routines that support performance. Others reveal habits that need adjustment. The better we understand them, the better we can refine training, correct what is not working well enough, and reinforce what consistently works....

Maximus O Meeting 2026

Four Days. Four Terrains. One Identity. Some events fill a weekend. And some events build something much bigger. The Maximus O Meeting 2026 was not just four races in four days. It was a statement of intent. A confirmation that when vision, passion, and professional standards meet, something special happens in the forest. This is the story of four stages. The grand finale of the Maximus O Meeting was set up perfectly. A chase start. Tight gaps. Everything on the line. 🎯🔥

And it absolutely delivered.

In a dreamlike setting at El Burguillo, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and under a blazing sun for the fourth consecutive day ☀️, the final stage offered demanding yet joyful courses. Bare rocks, massive boulders, steep cliffs, and beautiful open meadows created a playground where every athlete could express their best orienteering.

It was tough. It was fun. It was pure Maximus.

In the women’s elite race, Pia Young Vik showed control and maturity, defending her overall lead and securing the global victory 👑 But behind her, the battle was fierce. Aleksandra Hornik executed a smart move on the final loop to clinch second place, while the young Hungarian talent Janka Mikes completed a very solid championship to take the third step of the podium 🥉

Then came the drama in the men’s race.

Oskar Hägström started the day in the lead, but a mistake at control 10 changed everything. He was caught… and shortly after overtaken by his teammate Lucas Basset, who turned the tables to claim the overall victory in spectacular fashion 🏆💥

The fight for third was intense as well, with the Kalevan Rasti squad battling hard, and it was Santeri Kirjavainen who secured the final podium position.

What a finish. What a championship.

This has been a great Maximus O Meeting. Magnificent terrains. High level competition. And above all, countless smiles in the forest 🌿😊

Thank you all for coming.
See you in 2027.

The Best Choose Maximus. 🔥

Stage 3 brought the Maximus O Meeting into a completely different arena… and what a show it was 🏘️🔥

Welcome to Navatalgordo, a beautiful and intricate village that proved to be a true paradise for sprint orienteering 🧭⚡ A place that won over everyone. From the pure sprint lovers to the more “old school” athletes who don’t always embrace this format… today, no one was left indifferent.

Its chaotic and unpredictable architecture turned the race into a high-speed chess game ♟️ Athletes were flying through the streets, constantly searching for that perfect balance between speed and control… and as expected, that balance was not always easy to find.

Another stunning day under the sun ☀️ with temperatures again above 24°C. The weather this year… simply unbelievable.

In the men’s race, Oskar Hagström delivered a very solid performance to take the win, later admitting at the finish that this had been one of the most fun sprints he has ever raced 😄🔥

On the women’s side, victory went to Aleksandra Hornik, confirming her strength in this fast and demanding format 💥

Everything is now set for the grand finale… the chase start 🎯

MEN: Oskar Hägström leads with almost 3 minutes over Lucas Basset… will it be enough to secure the overall victory? 👀
WOMEN: Pia Young Vik holds a strong lead of 8 minutes, but the battle for the podium promises fireworks 💣 Hornik, Mikes, and Van Dongen will start within less than 35 seconds of each other… this is going to be intense.

Last day to go… ⏳
And the fight is far from over 😎🔥

If Stage 1 left us with a fantastic feeling… Stage 2 has taken it to another level 🚀🔥

The Dehesa de Navaluenga, voted World’s Best Orienteering Course 2024 in its eastern part, is simply one of those places where it’s impossible not to feel like a kid again 🌳🧭

A highly demanding technical terrain that constantly pushes athletes to their limits. It requires precision, flow, and sharp decision-making at every moment… and it never leaves anyone indifferent. Pure orienteering at its finest 🧠⚡

Once again, the sun was shining strongly ☀️ with temperatures close to 24°C, creating the perfect setting for an unforgettable day in the forest. Everyone enjoyed it… but many paid the price of small technical mistakes. That’s the beauty of this sport.

In the women’s race, Pia Young Vik delivered again, securing her second consecutive victory and strengthening her lead in the overall standings 👑

On the men’s side, a brilliant performance from Julien Vuitton, who, as the sole representative of Halden SK, managed to take the win against the powerful squads of OK Linné and Kalevan Rasti 💪🔥

Let’s go Halden! 😉

What a day to kick things off at the Maximus O Meeting 🔥🌿

Stage 1 delivered absolutely everything you could ask for… and more. Spectacular terrain, a blazing sun overhead ☀️, and perfect racing conditions at around 20°C. The forest was alive with action from the very first start to the final finish 🧭💥

We had the privilege of working on a true gem of a map, crafted by Tommi Hakuli. Designing the courses here has been, once again, an absolute pleasure. And yes… I’ve done it many times before, but it never gets boring 🙌

What makes this map truly special is its diversity. Constant changes in terrain that force athletes to adapt, stay sharp, and make the right decisions under pressure. Pure orienteering 🧠⚡

And the favorites did not disappoint. Pia Young Vik and Oskar Hagström set the tone from the start, taking the stage wins and hitting the estimated winning time of 80 minutes almost to perfection ⏱️👏

A powerful opening statement.

3 stages to go… ⏳
The game is on.

This is Maximus 😎🔥
