𝑅𝓊𝓁𝑒𝓈 𝓉𝑜 𝓁𝒾𝓋𝑒 𝒷𝓎

Over the years, we’ve come up with our own set of philosophies for success, and over the next ten days we’ll be sharing them- our own set of commandments.

9️⃣ Never Stop Learning

- Another beautiful part of our sport is that it’s always evolving. There’s always a different approach or an alternative method to try. It’s important to build a toolkit you can draw on when faced with a new challenge.
- Each rider has their own combination of strengths and weaknesses, and recognising those is important. Like we said before- remember look for new ideas or advice where you might need to.
- The only way to continue towards success is to keep an open mind, be confident in what you know but curious enough to learn new things.
- Success with horses is not a destination but a journey. There are so many factors that are ever changing and you may need to change your approach alongside them. Take young horses for example- what works one week or month, may not work the next. As they develop and grow, keep thinking about what factors you may need to change. Having said that, it’s also important to not try to fix something that isn’t broken.
- Success with horses is more about the constant self reflection. Enjoy the good moments and keep pushing through the hard ones - this is all part of the infinite journey of “perfection”.
- Horses are living, breathing animals with a mind of their own- we may never achieve perfection but we can keep trying to make improvements on the small margins that make the difference.
-
Tomorrow marks the last instalment of our Den Ten series, and perhaps the most important of all 👀

🔟 Be grateful

8️⃣ Not too high, not too low

- The thing about showjumping is that is a very humbling sport. We put in 100% effort, work long days, train rigorously for hours, dot all the i’s and cross all the t’s- all for 90 seconds in the ring.
- One of my first show jumping trainers used to say to me that you were only as good as your last round. The difficult part of that is even when you have a great round, it’s still a clean slate the next time you step in the ring. But the beauty of it is that when you have a bad round, you can get right back at it with another chance.

- In a sport where there are inevitably more lows than highs- it’s so important to make sure that you celebrate your wins and good results. And equally important to not dwell on the tough days where things don’t go to plan.

- Always keep your actions ambitious and your attitude humble, because if you don’t - you can be sure than your horse will.

7️⃣ Set the standard

- Lead a team from the front. Set an example - everything from how you present yourself, to how you treat other people and how you look after your horses.

- It’s as simple as showing up. Show up every day with a positive attitude, and ready to be better. Be ready to learn, ready to work hard and push towards your goals. Bring others up to the same level as you- motivate, inspire and support them to be their best self.

- Respect your team and respect your horses. Don’t expect their automatic respect in return, but work hard to make sure you’re worthy of their respect.
-
- Keep a high standard in the stable- and start with yourself. Never expect people to jobs you wouldn’t do yourself. If you lead by example and prove willing to muck in and get everything done together as a team, it will automatically raise everyone else’s standard, their respect, and their motivation.

6️⃣ Teamwork does make the dream work

- When we talk about teams, it’s important to think not just of the horse and rider, but of the professionals around you who’s input is invaluable
- These include grooms, coaches, farriers, vets, physios, and anyone else who has an input in to the success of both the horses and the business
- Other than the relationship with the horse, a riders relationship with their groom is the most important. The rider and groom are the two people who are most consistently around the horses so it’s vitally important for them both to have a solid base of trust and understanding, and and mutual approach to the welfare of the horses. Grooms form the foundation of the care of our horses and work tirelessly to make sure they are well cared for, so a good working relationship is so important.

- It’s crucial to have trust and respect between your farriers and vets - they provide the base of soundness for the horse, and to have them working together is more valuable than working separately.

- Having clear goals that everyone understands and has the tools available to work towards is vital for everyone’s wellbeing and success. Take time to talk through these goals with all of the team members to make sure everyone’s on the same page and committed to the same outcome.

- Like we said yesterday- one person can’t do it all. These horses are athletes and need to be treated as such- but they’re also individuals, and need an individual approach. A strong team is one where everyone knows their specific role, and respects and trusts the other team members to take care of their roles.

- A team is built from the base upwards, with each part as important as the other. The farriers are in charge of the feet, the vet the joints and muscles, the grooms the day to day care, and the rider the fitness of the horse

- Once you have built a strong team of trusted people around you, the success will follow.
