Ahh the quickstep!! We can owe the origin of this dance to the immigrant population that popularized it, as is common for most ballroom dances. The core of quickstep comes from dancers of African and Caribbean decent living suburban New York. They started the dance during World War I, were it was first danced solo! The quickstep started off as a combination of the Slow Foxtrot (which is another dance WuBDA does), Charleston, One-step, Peabody, and S**g, and was standardized England in 1927. It was originally called the “QuickTime Foxtrot and Charleston”, but I’m happy they shorted this mouthful of a name! The dance is fast and lively, with hops and syncopations aplenty, setting it apart from the Slow Foxtrot. The dance became increasingly popular as bands stared to play slow Foxtrot music too fast, which was appropriate as intricate, fast dances were becoming all the rage. Did you know that the energy exerted while dancing a minute of quickstep is the same as running a kilometre and a half in record time?!
I’ll see you soon when we’ll learn about the Rumba!

Let’s start with the Cha Cha (originally called the Cha Cha Cha)! This fun and peppy dance originated from Cuba, where it evolved from the Cuban Triple Mambo (a mix of swing and Cuban Són) and the Danzon (the Cuban national dance). Danzo-mambo music was changed so that it focused on the first downbeat, resulting in dancers adding a triple step (the cha cha cha) to the dance. They say that the name comes from an onomatopoeia of the sound of dancers shoes!
In the 1950s, the dance was introduced to Britain by Pierre Lavelle, an English dance teacher who saw Cha Cha dancers in Cuba. He created the basis of the modern dance that we use today in WuBDA. In the 1950s, the dance was brought to Western Europe, the United States and Latin America, and by 1959 it was even one of the most popular dances in the US. The ballroom Cha-Cha is less then a hundred years old, but is continuously evolving and continues to be popular around the world.

See you soon where I’ll tell you all about the quickstep!

On Sunday the 15th, we got a bootcamp given to us by none other than Mihai and Lisa! Four hours long, they enlightened us on posture, frame, timing and other technicalities of the dances. It is safe to say that everybody learned and improved a lot. Thanks a lot for the great bootcamp, !

Weather is ever changing, so you need to make the most of it when it's good. WuBDA did this in the form of a beach party! Our members got together at the Rhine to enjoy the sun, drinks, snacks and of course each others company. Still, evenings get a little chilly, so inside they went. Strange hairdos and table football battles ensued. Overall, a very fun evening.

Last week was the alumni day. Our dear old members got together to dance with us once more. First they got their dinner served by some of our current members, after which they gathered in the Wilde Wereld to dance to their hearts content. It was great to see everyone again, and to catch up on what everybody is up to. On to the next alumni day!
