Ominous - BattleBots

Next Thursday we face the crafty Valkyrie - BattleBot , one of the meanest horizontals in the sport and winner of the Most Destructive award in 2020.
We had to face one eventually and came prepared. This fight introduces our horizontal configuration "Le bumper"

We're back!!

Filmed concurrently with WCVII, the spin off series BattleBots Champions II, the battle for the Golden Bolt!

Shatter hit us where it hurt. That first hit managed to dislodge the access panel which hinged right in into our drive motor, shattering the magnets.
Despite losing partial drive, we still managed to do damage to our opponent, leaving some nice slots in the billet frame and finishing the full 3 minutes.

Remember the old BattleBots saying: don't let it go to the judges!

We are disappointed to not be in the top 32 this time, but hopeful to return next season. Thank you for supporting Ominous.

This Thursday we face Shatter! from Bots FC, the first time at BattleBots two omnidirectional robots meet! This will be our last chance to qualify for the Top 32 with our current 1-2 trackrecord.

Since we knew our schedule in advance, we used SendCutSend and Lincoln Electric to change Ominous to be more hammer proof, including reinforced front wheelpods and uhmw top armour.

So we were totally before we stopped winning and lost. The weapon worked beautifully and split the AR500 front wedge of Switchback - Battlebot lengthwise.

But unkown to us the hydraulic powerpack for the selfrighter shifted inside the robot locking the motor into a cutout in the frame. This meant we could not selfright after that last hit as became painfully apparent within ~50 seconds.

This results in a 1-2 score for Ominous with the next matchup against our brother from an Omni mother, Shatter!

Our first win! But not exactly the win we were hoping for, the weapon stopped spinning after that first hit with Shreddit Bro - Battlebots. Although we took some damage to the teeth of the weapon, the drum and internal motor were fine.

Ominous was originally designed for the small MGM 25063 controllers we still had from Reality, but the additional testing since 2020 showed that this controller was woefully undersized for it's application.

Turns out that trying to shoehorn a big MGM 40063 weapon motor controller in the robot wasn't that easy after all. That bigger ESC made sure the hub motor would spin without error/faults, but it also decreased the clearance towards the hard metal outside of the frame. That hit mushroomed the sides of the controller in such a way that it still kinda functioned, but any high current would trigger an error in the MGM and had to be reset. That's why we could spin up slowly, but any contact would kill the power.

Luckily we received a spare MGM right before we had to fly to Vegas and with some additional rubber padding we should be ready for our next fight against Switchback - Battlebot

After what seemed like an eternity this Thursday we face our fellow rookiebot Shreddit Bro - Battlebots during our second match on BattleBots Discovery

It seemed that they had a bit more drive issues compared to our previous opponent, so let's hope we can take advantage of that..

Ominous wasn't the only thing going sideways this match. We had hoped to meet the Claw Viper from the previous seasons, but Kevin had made some serious improvements to the drive power/grip and reliability. Ominous is a difficult beast to control but Claw Viper didn't allow for much time to get our bearings.

We did some, but minimal, damage to the other robot and survived the match relatively unscaved ourselves. This meant that we could quickly prepare for our next match against Shreddit Bro - Battlebots after our first loss of the season.
