1. Who are you and what is it that you do?

‘MI am Saskia, 51 and I live in The Hague. I write, paint, love to work in the garden. I used to be a Communications manager. The last two years I’ve changed a lot: I quit my job, started my own business, made a lot of different decisions that were for me, one of those being to start working out.
I absolutely hate regular gyms. So I searched, without much hope to find a fitting place. Boy, was I wrong! Because only 100 meters from my house, there was a female holistic gym. In order for me to work out consistently, I needed to rule out any
possible excuses. The Sweatbox this close to home had to be it.’

2. What do you do at the sweatbox?

‘I follow pt with Giovanna, 2x a week. In membership terms, I’m a ‘Warrior’, which I found funny, because I didn’t feel like a warrior at all. Maybe mentally bit by bit, because of all the changes made, but definitely not physically. Hence strength and flexibility were my main goals, to align my physical process with my mental process. Time to say goodbye to muscle weakness.’

3. Whats your favourite exercise, why?

‘Definitely squats & hip openers. I love the feeling of strength and openness in my lower body. I am a certified Qigong teacher and in Chinese Medicine, just like the Chakra’s in Indian philosophies like yoga, the lower dantain is the mother of all life energy sources. Life’s motor. So working on that part, feeling strength and openness, is a great feeling. Empowering. + I’m a big fan of boxing!’

4. Your least fav, and why?

‘I’m not sure. I’ve asked Gio what she thought and we laughed about it, because what I used to dislike where those exercises that confronted me with my weaknesses. Such as shoulders. Now the strength is improving I even start to like those! So I don’t have real dislikes. I would say I don’t like cardio: running, jumping. But who knows, that might change too!’

Let’s shift ‘Strength training makes women bulky’ to
‘Strength training makes us healthy’

Here’s why we need strength, besides restorative and cardiovascular work outs such as yoga, pilates or hiit:

1. It’s not only hours on the treadmill that make you burn calories -> lifting weight🫱🏻‍🫲🏽 fatburn.🔥

2. It boosts your mood and reduces stress🧘🏼‍♀️

3. In cases of hormonal issues such as PCOS, controlled strength training actually helps you with insuline resistance🙌🏻

4. Imagine a pyramid with the top tier called ‘bulky’. Below the top tier are many many other steps called ‘lean & toned’. It takes years of heavy lifting and progressive overload to become ‘bulky’. It takes frequent strength training to become ‘lean & toned’. To re-cap in short: heavy lifting is strength training, but not all forms of strength training are called heavy lifting.😉

5. It reduces injuries, back aches and helps us age healthily

6. It improves bone density, core stability and pelvic strength which is especially important when we are in menopause💪🏻

‘Should you workout during Ramadan?’ Entirely up to you!
Here follow a couple of tips for if you are working out during Ramadan:

• Cut back on cardio, and skip high intensity cardio to avoid dehydration and dizzyness. Delay this until after Iftar.
• make mornings your prime time to do low intensity movement: such as walking, yoga, pilates to avoid a dip in blood sugar levels.
• save the evenings for controlled strength training or after breaking your fast.
• slightly lower in the volume of your training than usual, but of course this depends on how you feel!
