The Home Guard is designed to operate across the entire conflict scale – from providing peacetime assistance to society in times of crisis, to armed struggle in wartime. The Home Guard is part of the Swedish Armed Forces and comprises nearly half of the Swedish Armed Forces’ body of personnel.

The Home Guard units are modern combat units with the main responsibility to protect, guard and monitor Swedish territory and also provide support to society in times of crisis. In this way, the Home Guard units provide a territorial base for the defence and protection of Sweden.

HOME GUARD UNITS
The Home Guard consists of standby units with advanced and adequate equipment. The most common types of units are guard companies and task force companies. Guard companies are stationary units that operate locally, whereas task companies are mobile tactical units with more advanced tasks. The task force companies move by means of tanks, cross-country vehicles and specially equipped minibuses. They are thereby able to concentrate their efforts where they are needed most.

The Home Guard also solves tasks along the Swedish coasts by means of shipborne units and intelligence companies that gather intelligence through reconnaissance and surface surveillance. There are also CBRN platoons, traffic platoons, pioneer platoons and gr***de launcher platoons. With joint communications and command and control systems, interoperability with other Swedish Armed Forces units is achieved. Their readiness times are very short and measured in hours, not days or weeks.

SUPPORT TO SOCIETY
Should Sweden be hit by natural disasters, large-scale accidents or exposed to other threats against society, the Home Guard stands prepared to assist the police, the rescue services and other authorities. In forest fires, flooding, pandemics or searches for missing people, the Home Guard units provide an extra resource. Every year, the Home Guard conducts a large number of such support operations.

A MORE MODERN, MORE EFFICIENT HOME GUARD
The Home Guard is constantly developing. The equipment is gradually becoming more advanced, the soldiers are getting younger and the demands put on the Home Guard are constantly increasing. New units with new capabilities are formed. The Home Guard intelligence companies are tasked with gathering intelligence through reconnaissance and surface surveillance. They are supported by the Home Guard air squads. Home Guard battalions with naval tasks operate along the Swedish coasts and in the archipelagos.

The Home Guard also has more than 25 Home Guard military bands. In total, the Home Guard units comprise approximately 21 000 men and women all over the country.

DEVELOPMENT, RESPONSIBILITY AND A SENSE OF COMMUNITY
All who serve in the Home Guard are volunteers. Instead of employment, a contract is signed on serving a certain number of days per year, in training and exercise. Most of the volunteers have completed military service or basic military training. There are also many specialists (medical orderlies, dispatch riders and dog handlers) without previous military experience. They are trained by volunteer defence organisations and subsequently posted in Home Guard units. All applicants to the Home Guard must undergo security vetting. Serving in the Home Guard provides an opportunity for personal growth, individual responsibility and offers a unique sense of community.

Swedish Special Forces unit on site in Mali
Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters – 8 February 2021 kl: 17.04
Archived news
The main part of the Swedish troop contribution to the multinational Special Forces Task Force Takuba is now on site in Mali.

Sweden’s 150-strong troop contribution to Task Force Takuba also comprises helicopters and transport aircraft.
Task Force Takuba is a multinational special forces operation.
Task Force Takuba is a multinational special forces operation.
“The primary task for our Swedish Special Forces unit is to act as a rapid response force when something happens. Other tasks involve assisting, counselling and accompanying the Malian security forces”, Brigadier General Anders Löfberg, head of the Special Forces Command, says.

MALI IS A JIHADIST HOTSPOT
Mali is one of the world’s poorest countries, and in recent years, criminal activities such as human trafficking, illegal trade with arms and drugs have soared, as well as kidnappings and terrorist attacks. The country has become a hotspot for violence-inciting Islamist groups, i.a. groups with links to Daesh and al-Qaida.

“The people of Mali are plagued by criminal and Islamist terrorist groups. Special Forces units are a good resource to use in the fight against the terrorist groups, as they can be swiftly deployed to various parts of the country, thus preventing conflicts from escalating and terrorism from spreading”, Brigadier General Anders Löfberg continues.

SWEDEN'S COMMITMENT IN MALI IS SUBSTANTIAL
The Swedish commitment in Mali is large; Sweden has deployed 150 troops to Task Force Takuba as well as helicopters and transport aircraft. Sweden also contributes a 215-strong troop to the UN-led operation Minusma as well as eight troops to the EU force, EUTM Mali.

Along with contributions from France, Estonia and the Czech Republic, among others, the Swedish contribution is part of the long-term commitment to promote safety and security in Mali, with the aim of obtaining sustainable and peaceful development in the country.

The Swedish troop in Task Force Takuba comprises a helicopter-borne rapid response force, deployed in Ménaka, in north-eastern Mali. A Swedish transport aircraft is based in Niamey in Niger.

A Tale of Two Crossings. June 2019
Normandy to Lee-on-Solent and back again.
Roy Mobsby Pathfinder UK

As we seem to make a habit of it Pathfinder International Parachute Group made history yet again by flying from Carpiquet Normandy to Lee-on-Solent, with every intention of parachuting into the former Naval Air Station of HMS Daedalus, repacking and then flying back to Sannerville to carry out a second drop.

'Daks over Normandy' eat your heart out.

A lot has been said already on the fiasco that was 'Daks over Normandy' which luckily we and Aero Legends were nothing to do with.

We had at the invitation of 16 Air Assault Brigade taken part in their mass drop and cleared the DZ before the 'Money machine' that was 'Daks' came in behind us nearly cutting the Red Devils canopy stack in half, managed to do a completely realistic re-enactment of the original invasion by dropping over half of France from different directions, different heights, and different airspeeds.

How anyone didn't get killed is beyond me. Those that knew no better thought they saw a well-choreographed, well-organized and well realistic WW2 type drop.

Those who knew thought they were watching the potential air disaster of the century.

Despite the air of confusion thrown up around Brauns' fiasco and despite some bad weather and high winds, Pathfinder, with help from our French friends and 16 Air Assault Brigade were able to carry out all drops planned but one with no injuries and no chutes damaged.

On the last day, we still had two drops that had not to be executed as well as the cross channel drop. The weather looked iffy and already the two daylight drops had been postponed until later in the day.

Another hasty plan was formed. The C-47 for the UK would take off no matter what the weather and fly on the off chance they got a weather window in the UK.

We hate to let people down, jumpers and spectators alike. The weather forecast for France was that the winds were to be dropping off in the evening. Our NOTAM was until 2000hrs so we decided to go for it!

Myself and a couple of other jumpers stood down to give others the chance to jump in the UK so with their chutes drawn and fitted the Cross channel jumpers traveled by minibus to Carpiquet to board 'Drag-em-oot.

A bit of logistic juggling then took place. On her return Drag-em-oot would fly off to drop the American groups but 'Dunbo Express, Keith Perkins second aircraft, would then take over the mission attempting to drop two further lifts from Carpiquet to Sannerville.

It sounded like a plan so fingers and eyes were crossed. As Drag-em-oot lifted off for the UK the other two chalks were being bussed to Carpiquet and there started the waiting game.

Pretty soon we were getting reports that Drag-em-oot had landed without getting a drop.

The winds we too high. However, our jumpers were off the aircraft, talking to the general public and showing off their equipment.

Other enthusiasts were getting to look around our C-47 FOR FREE, something that had not happened at Carpiquet with the air show that had been planned by another organization. despite a no-drop, public relations wise it was a success.

After a reasonable time, our intrepid cross channel team kitted up, emplaned, and started the journey back over the pond. back at the DZ in France, the wind was dropping by the minute.

As if by magic several hundred people turned up to watch the drop.

It seems it has been advertised on a local-based website that we were on the drop zone and preparing for a drop and word had got around.

Iain Rodgers, who was doing sterling work as DZSO, cleared the drop, and Ian Marshal with dead eye reckoning put out all our cross-channel jumper in two passes.

Everyone on the DZ no injuries. The applause was deafening.

We now start planning for a few airshows we have been requested on in the UK and the final event of our year, Arnhem.

Since starting to write this the favorable reports are filtering back as well as a thank you from 16 Air Assault Brigade for our assistance with their DZ recce and advice. They also had a very successful Normandy anniversary with no injuries. So I think we can say we have done our veterans proud. Well done everyone.

"Utrinque Paratus".
