What is the correct badminton backhand grip?🏸👇
The correct badminton backhand grip is the thumb grip (also called the backhand grip). The key is that your thumb presses flat against the wider bevel of the racket handle, giving you leverage to generate power and control.
Here’s how to hold it:
1. Start with a relaxed forehand grip (like a handshake).
2. Rotate the racket slightly counterclockwise (for a right-handed player) until your thumb rests flat on the broad bevel at the back of the handle.
* If you’re left-handed, rotate it the opposite direction.
3. Keep your fingers relaxed, with the index finger slightly separated from the others for better control.
4. Don’t squeeze the handle tightly—hold it loosely and tighten your grip only at the moment of impact.
Key points
* 👍 Thumb is flat against the bevel, not wrapped around the handle.
* 👍 The grip is relaxed until you hit the shuttle.
* 👍 Power comes from finger tightening and forearm rotation, not just swinging your arm.
Common mistakes
* ❌ Holding a forehand grip on the backhand side.
* ❌ Wrapping the thumb around the handle instead of pressing it flat.
* ❌ Gripping the racket too tightly throughout the stroke.
* ❌ Using only the wrist for power instead of combining fingers, forearm, and wrist.
When to use this grip
The thumb grip is ideal for:
* Backhand clears
* Backhand drives
* Backhand lifts
* Defensive backhand blocks
* Net kills and net pushes on the backhand side
One important note: in doubles, many players make small grip changes between forehand, bevel, and thumb grips rather than using one fixed backhand grip for every shot. Learning to switch grips quickly is a fundamental badminton skill.
A good practice drill is to stand still and repeatedly rotate between your forehand and thumb grip without looking at the racket. Once that feels natural, practice hitting gentle backhand drives using only finger power before progressing to full backhand clears.
