Camp has started!

I’m spending the next five days with the first-year students of Albeda Danscollege, as they take their first steps into their new training as dancers and dance instructors. Albeda Danscollege Albeda Dansinstructeur

I’ve been doing this camp for 20 years now, and every year it’s a mix of excitement, nerves, hard work, getting to know each other and discovering what this new adventure is going to be like.

My roles this week? Teacher, cook, organiser and…
yes, I’m also teaching the famous sleeping bag class: Yin yoga, literally on their sleeping bags.

It’s a busy week, but I love being there at the very beginning of their journey.

Let’s see what this new group will bring.

Summer may be over, but the dancing season is just getting started!

Our summer course was a wonderful success, and now we’re getting ready for a new season at Talvandansen.

60 days of playing in my favorite playground Buitenkunst What a ride!
Feels like season 2026 was my strongest ever. Made countless choreographies. Some of which I’ll remember for ever (and I think my dancers and the audience will too). Had an 81 year old dancer rol on the floor of the big dance tent crying from happiness. Made homage performances inspired by: Ohad Naharin, Pina Bausch, Hofesh Shechter, Alexander Ekman, DV8, Wim Vandekeybus, Sidi Larbi and probably some more I don’t even remember now. Made lots of cocktails and had great late night talks with colleagues. Walked kilometers. Watched countless performances and exhibitions. Ate too many croissants. Danced with the oldest and the youngest (on the same day!). Researched things like: animation from the 1920 and Mao’s Red Guard Loyalty dance (on the same day!). Saw the eclipse and countless falling stars (on the same day!). Danced to Schubert and Banga Ranga and everything in between. Never missed home.

Can ballet help prevent falls as we age? 🩰

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury in older adults, but could years of ballet training help the body recover from a loss of balance?

In this study, we compared 20 older recreational ballet dancers with 23 age- and sex-matched nondancers during an unexpected standing slip.

Here’s what we found:

🩰 45% of the dancers fell compared with 83% of the nondancers.

The dancers also:
• Recovered their balance more effectively
• Took faster, more efficient recovery steps
• Slipped a shorter distance
• Activated key leg muscles more quickly after the slip

Together, these findings suggest that ballet training may improve the body’s ability to respond to an unexpected loss of balance through both biomechanical and neuromuscular adaptations.

Of course, this doesn’t mean ballet eliminates the risk of falling, and this study cannot prove cause and effect. But it does provide exciting evidence that the movement skills developed through ballet may carry over into everyday life!

It’s one more reminder that ballet isn’t just an art form… it’s a powerful way to train balance, coordination, strength, and movement throughout the lifespan.

'Verwacht zweet, spierpijn en creatieve doorbraken in deze diepe duik, waarin urban dance en filosofie samensmelten. Ervaring in urban dance en een goede conditie zijn vereist. Neem je kniebeschermers mee!'

Van 8 t/m 15 augustus 'Iconische danswerken' door Tal Sofer

'We duiken in de dansgeschiedenis, onderzoeken iconische werken en hoe we elementen uit oorspronkelijk dansrepertoire kunnen gebruiken en toch een eigen versie kunnen maken. Voor deelnemers met (technische) danservaring, een getraind dansgeheugen en een goede conditie.'
