The Squat is a compound, full body exercise that trains primarily the muscles of the thighs, hips and buttocks, quads, hamstrings, as well as strengthening the bones, ligaments and insertion of the tendons throughout the lower body. Squats are considered a vital exercise for increasing the strength and size of the legs and buttocks, as well as developing core strength. Our example is shown using the SMR1000 Squat Rack.

START by setting your barbell on the lift-offs so that you can bend your knees slightly and step under it to set it on your shoulders. Position yourself under the bar so that it rests on the back of your shoulders and trapezius, not your neck. Hold the bar with a wide overhand grip. Straighten your legs to lift it off the rack, step forward and set your feet shoulder width apart with your knees slightly bent and your lower back in its natural arched position.

Initiating the downward movement at the hips, not the knees, lower yourself as though sitting on a chair behind you. Stop when the tops of your thighs are parallel to the floor, pause, then push back up tot he starting position. Your knees should stay in line with your feet throughout the movement - they shouldn't splay out or pinch in.

The Shoulder Press is a resistance exercise designed to strengthen and develop the shoulders and back. Our example is done using the GST20 Utility Stool.

START by sitting on the bench and picking up a dumbell in each hand. Begin with an overhand grip and the dumbells raised with your elbows parralel to the floor.

Press the weights straight up over your shoulders. Do not lock your arms. pause, then slowly return to the starting position.

The Upright Row is used to strengthen and develop various muscles in the back. Which muscles are targeted depend on the form. It is a good exercise for overall strength and size. The Upright Row can ber performed with a barbell, dumbells , or a variety of machines. Our example is shown with a G2 Home Gym lower pulley cable.

START by attaching a straight bar to the lower cable of your home gym or pulley machine. Face the weight stack and grab the bar with an overhand grip. Stand about two feet away from the pulley and hold the bar at arm's length, in front of your thighs.

Pull the bar up until your upper arms are parrallel to the floor. Pause, then slowly lower the bar to the starting position.

Variations of the Upright Row include:

The Bench Press is used to strengthen and develop thechest, triceps and deltoids. It can be performed on a bench wih barbells or dumbells, or with a variety of machines or home gym systems. Our example is the classic bench press with a barbell.

START by lying on the bench or machine with your head, torso and hips pressed against the pad and your feet spread wide and flat on the floor. Frab the barbell with a full overhand grip. Place your hands slightly wider than shoulder width. Lift the barbell off of the uprights and hold it with straight arms over your collarbone. Pull your shoulder blades together in back.

Lower the bar, slowely and in full control, to just above your ni***es. then press it back up and just slightly back so that it finishes above your collarbone once again. Stop just short of locking your elbows and keep your shoulder blades pulled back.

Variations of the Bench Press include:

with a weighted resistance machine or home gym
with rubber resistance bands
with dumbells, kettlebells or medicine balls
