What’s next?

After the Ironman I’ve taken 7 full rest days which were well needed since I ended up getting sick (ofc). I was expecting to feel horrible so it’s fine and it was a nice week to recharge a bit.

Next week I will start with my general preparation phase, which will mean I’ll try to become a better all-round athlete again and build multiple physical qualities simultaneously. In practice this means I’ll be back into sprinting (or at least building up to some intensity), more heavy lifting and upperbody training, some skill work and a nice amount of endurance volume, with also the ski and row back on the menu after a year. My training volume will still be really high but it’s a bit more spread out over multiple modalities and really well dosed (hopefully).

I think I’ve built an amazing training phase, which will be 5 weeks followed by another 5 weeks of general prep phase. After that I’ll get into a more specific prep phase for the ATHX games which will be my main focus for the rest of the year. I think with my strengths I can really compete there well and i’m excited to showcase that.

This week is more of a transition week, where I’ll get used to my new training setup with way less intensity and volume to still recover after the ironman and not be stupid to rush too fast back into things.

I’m still kinda disappointed in my ironman finish time but proud how I pushed through and left hungry again to keep chasing. I’m also really happy that the swim training is over, holy dog that was a pain in the ass.

Time to lock in again 🫡

Tried my best

Preparation has been awesome last months and I had a lot of trust in my fitness. I actually wasn’t really nervous the days leading up to the competition and the day itself. We finished all the lifts around 4am and I felt fresh and ready to go.

Last preparations done and I took my last gel. Felt good and excited to start the swim. I was talking with Max and I randomly puked out my whole breakfast over his feet (sorry bro). We were laughing and at that point I just had to accept it. Turned out I had more nerves than I thought and felt like. My stomach has always been a big weakpoint of mine, which isn’t great for big endurance events.

Started the swim and I was just burping the whole time. Had a really mid swim with 1.25 as end time. I hoped the stomach would settle down and was totally committed to still rock this ironman.

Hopped on the bike and tried to follow my raceplan (ride around 245-250w). Just tried to stay positive but I almost puked out all the nutrition I tried to consume. Slowly turned into a big battle and the second lap of the bike course was just a paincave with minimal energy. I had a hard time holding 220w while normally that’s easy for me. Got from the bike feeling like a weak p**s maniac and even managed to fall with my bike in the transition zone.

I knew I felt horrible but still wanted to try and get that sub10. Felt so extremely weak and was already deep in the paincave 3km in losing my pace. It was a long, long day. I managed to consume 30g of carbs and 100ml liquid during the run, rest left the body real soon again. In the whole day I consumed around 1L of liquids and around 100-120g of carbs. That’s just a little over 10g of carbs an hour. Can’t advise it.

I don’t know if I did a too aggressive carbload or that it was purely the nerves that influenced the stomach problems. I felt comfortable as I said and was really hyped to finish this challenge.

Disappointed but proud I didn’t stopped running and just battled all the way to the finish. Quitting otherwise becomes a habit, always finish. Really left it all out there.
