Everything changed when I stepped into my identity as a singer.

I wanted so bad to be taken seriously as a singer.

"You sing? You're in a choir?". Sigh.

Singing in the Netherlands is considered a hobby, unless you're a Known Dutchie. Imagine the frowns when I say "I'm a Singer".

Because I know it makes me walk up straight. It makes me proud. It makes me smile when the songs touch others. It makes me alive. It belongs with me like my long hair. I know I'm good. At least above average. I worked hard for that. WHY NOT call myself a singer?

"But you didn't do conservatorium". Correct. But I have paid performances every week now. Do you? How many of you do other work now, instead of performing?
And are we simply gonna skip the weekly private singing lessons for over a decade and a half?

Sometimes the blindfolds of others get to me. And then I shrug

and get in my car on the way to do another show. 🙂

I love identity. See less

JUST ME - Recovery

Last Tuesday I gave a new masterclass on The Split.
You know what I mean. You're fine rehearsing your speech or song at home, but the moment there's an audience, that fine-ness is gone.

And when I do something intensive like giving a masterclass, I need to calm down afterwards. And I didn't. I had things to do, tasks to finish before midnight and oh yes the replay upload, blah blah blah.

No wonder that the day after, my energy was on the low side. I had not done the same thing I taught in the masterclass: recovery. Critical for your nervous system to come back to the safety baseline.

I went to the gym and worked it all out of me, then took a long hot shower and had a cup of tea enjoying the view. That's how I do it.

What's your way to recover from something intensive?

She had the range. She had the practice.

"I don't know 100% what happened to me.
But I now sing with a lot more pleasure."

The shift didn't come from technique.
It came from something no lesson had ever touched.

Type IDENTITY below. June 9, free.

Walking to the grocery store.
Noticed I was upright, not hunched like normally.
A calmness I hadn't felt before.

That's what nervous system work actually feels like.

When did being seen start to feel like it cost you something?

Everyone has an answer.
Most people have never said it out loud.

June 9, 6pm CET. Free live masterclass on exactly this.

In your head: "I've totally got this."
In the room: something else entirely.

That gap is exhausting. And it has a name.

"I'm just not built for this."

That's not a personality trait.
That's a nervous system conclusion.

And those can change.
