🏐 Players are PLAYers, not drillers.

We recently had an interesting conversation with John Kessel, who shared many of his insights and experiences with us about coaching and player development.

According to John, volleyball players learn the game best by actually playing, not by endlessly repeating isolated drills.

Some of his key coaching insights:

• Less waiting, more ball contacts
• More 1v1, 2v2 and 3v3 game formats
• Use the net as much as possible
• Let players read, decide and find solutions themselves
• Treat mistakes as part of the learning process
• Train for the game, not just to make the drill look good

And perhaps most importantly:

Joy is not an extra. It is essential for development and for keeping players in the game.
