Yeah this Fox N**e is dead...

The cracked shim you see is the lockout valve, used to cover the oil ports when the lockout was toggled. But if you use it too much, it fatigues and breaks. This is simply a bad design.
The simple design also lacks any highspeed rebound valving, causing it to seriously lack performance on rough terrain.

I found a second hand Rockshox Monarch RT3 to replace it, and serviced + retuned it. Not only is the damping way better, the Debonair air spring will also modernize the way the suspension feels.

Sometimes equipment just fails...

But in this case I wonder why. The rim broke in a way I hadn't seen before. The rest of the rim was showing signs of overtensioning by buckling the aluminium, even though those spokes were all on the non-driveside were they should have lower tension.

But the show must go on, the party must continue! So I laced a new Race Face ARC 30 offset on the lovely Industry9 hub. Seems to be a pretty solid build again.

I opened up a Fox GRIP2 VVC damper yesterday.

I've been riding a '22 Fox 38 performance elite fork for a while now, and the damping never felt great to me. So it was time to service the fork, and update the damper cartridge to the 2024 specs.

A longer and stiffer IFP spring, a different shimstack for the basevalve and midvalve and some Motorex 4wt fluid. I'm really curious how it will feel at speed now, let's plan some fast and techy rides!!

First time lacing Erase Components v2 hubs!

I had a set of high gloss carbon all-road rims in the basement, and used them with these Erase Road hubs in a gorgeous Candy-Apple red that would look at home on a hotrod.

The freehub uses a 36t star ratchet, and is completely machined out of titanium. Erase is a Belgian manufacturer that tries to source it's materials as local as possible.

My new mullet enduro/bikepark wheelset, with a tint of purple!

I really considered going to a heavier stronger rim like the DT Swiss EX511 or Newmen Beskar 30 Strong, but I wanted to give this 'Base' version a try, and it didn't disappoint. Some unscientific testing showed both wheels are incredibly stiff, even with just 28 thin and light Sapim D-light spokes.

Time to refresh my rear derailleur!

This Shimano Deore XT 12 speed derailleur has not seen that many kilometers... but those kilometers have been rough! I noticed the clutch lever *clicking* which is not a good sign, and the movement was a bit clunky.

So I removed the clutch cover, cleaned and regreased the clutch, everything seems be as good as new now!

Let's try something different!

For a new wheelset for my Canyon Torque, I felt like trying some other hubs instead of the 'old' reliable DT350's.
So this time I'm going for the relatively new OneUp Components hubs. They weigh in at 366gr, which is almost as light as a Tune king/kong hubset, and they have a 44 tooth star ratchet.

Plus, they are dead sexy in this color purple!

I also considered the nice hubset from Erase components, but it was a bit more expensive, and my pockets are currently not that deep.

Today I finished this nice mullet trail wheelset. The indomitable DT Swiss 350 straightpull hubset laced to some DT Swiss XM481 rims. Gold anodized spoke ni***es to finish it off.

Should go nicely with the black/white Canyon Spectral with Fox factory suspension they are intended for.

I'm back baby!
This winter the zwartHQ moved to a different location, but I finally found some time to take up some new wheelbuilding jobs.
This wheelset has some nice carbon rims from Carbonal, and is laced to a classic Hope Pro2 EVO trials hubset using lovely (and rare) silver Sapim Laser spokes.

The wheelset will be used for the battle of the Dutch Singlespeed Championship!

I haven't posted any of the new wheels in a while.

There are only do much pictures you can make of a DT Swiss 350 hub, and even though I've been having quite a few wheels, I haven't photographed any of them.
But this time I got to lace some nice Hope RS4's to the very solid DT Swiss GR531db's using 32 Alpine aero spokes for both wheels.

The end result is a very very stiff and durable build, that will last a very long time.

They say everybody deserves a second chance...

These Enve rims were originally used on a rimbrake bike, but after a heavy life, the owner switched to a discbrake roadbike, and the rims are getting an easier life. The brake tracks have seen some wear & tear, but it should matter anymore with discs!

The front wheel was a bit of a challenge. The original wheel only had 20 spokes, and 20h disc hubs are more rare than a Unicorn 🦄. Luckily I caught one!
The rear hub is a trusty DT Swiss 350.

Spokes are the sturdy aero Sapim CX-sprints.

Ah new 27.5" wheel for a friends mullet bike.
Ringle superbubba hub with straightpull spokes and double freewheel ratchet (!)
Ex511 rim is very tough and still wide: 30mm internal.
