Viggo from Denmark contacted me a while ago asking me if I could come up with a wheelset built up with European components. Nothing from Asia or other parts of the world. After some discussions we came up with a very special wheelset which will perfectly fit his Pinarello

Rims:
Beast makes all kinds of carbon products in Dresden, Germany. Cockpits, stems, rims. You name it. Quality is top notch as is the finish.

Hubs: .cc
Qvist deputed a couple of years ago with their revolutionary double ratchet hub system. Twice the engagement points. Less wear on the ratchet system. Completely protected from the weather elements as the driving system is completely hidden in the hub instead of being situated between the hub and body where water can ingress. Spokes and ni***es:

A classy classic. All in black. Matchy matchy with just everything.
The trusty DT Swiss 240 EXP hubset in a Stealth color schema. The best spokes one can get: Sapim CX-RAY. Brass ni***es for reliable long term corrosion resistance. And last but not least the unparalled Enve SES rims.
What an extraordinary finish those rims do have. Not dull matte grey/black like the cheaper carbon rims are. Not too shiny. Just a perfect satin look, just enough to catch your eye in a subtle way.

Kind of sad to let those wheels go to their new owner.

Now this is something different than the usual suspects! Special projects are always fun to work on. So, what do we have here

Rims
VSW W45 UL. Our new ultra wide road/gravel rim. 25internal width, 45mm profile (also available at 35mm). Asymmetric spoke holes for a higher spoke tension on the non drive side. Equals a stiffer and stronger rear (and front) wheel. Raw carbon finish with a soft satin glow, a really premium look.

Hubs
Raketa Cycling Components designs and makes everything besides the bearings, in house. Sturdy hubs yet with a decent weight of 378gr for the pair. And those colors. 🤩😍
Premium quality bearings, good geometry, good weather sealing. A recipe for a great pair of hubs.

After extensive testing for the last couple of years, it's time to release this jewel of a hub. Equiped with the proven ratchet technology yet with a nifty twist.

Conventional ratchet freehub systems consist of two ratchet partners and all ratchet teeth engage simultaneously. As a result, the forces are distributed evenly over a large contact area, making the ratchet system of the utmost reliability. Since there is only space for a certain number of teeth on the ratchets, the number of engagement points is limited.

Enter .cc with the fouble ratchet system.

The DOUBLE RATCHET SYSTEM features three ratchet rings that engage alternately. Thus, the number of engagement points is doubled without compromising reliability. Only one side of the ratchet system is engaged at a time. Our oversized ratchet rings have an audiophile resolution of 60 teeth and the DOUBLE RATCHET SYSTEM thus 120 points of engagement and an engagement angle of 3°.

More than happy to see that more and more cyclists are stepping away from boring black on Black and put some colour on their pride. understands this by adding silver, red and orange colours to their hubs.

The anodising takes place in their own facilities which means they have total control of the quality. And I can only say one thing, quality is top notch.

Paired with our own raw carbon lightweight carbon hoops to create a perfect tracking, fast riding but yet comfortable pair of wheels.

The previous post was all about speed. This time it's all about weight. Less is more.

Ronald is an addicted and competitive cyclo rider. Where possible unnecessary weight is shaven off the bike. Quality low weight products can be found all over his bike.

One last big step was left: the wheels.
Prerequisities:
- modern wide rim
- serviceable spokes, ni***es and hub even abroad during an event
- tubeless ready
- not the standard matte grey color as most carbon wheels have
- steady in fast descents

Enter:
- Extralite hubs
- Duke Baccara SLR 2 36 Ultra rims (295gr each)
- Sapim CX-Ray spokes and ni***es
- Galfer IS disc rotors

Sure, there are other options to make the wheels sub 1kg. Berd spokes or carbon spokes for example. But at the end standard materials had our preference.

Some times weight is of essence. Other times speed is King. For most riders an allround wheelset will be more than perfect. But certain situations benefit from special tools.

In this wheelset the incredible smooth and fast rolling DT180 hubs are paired with the these-are-f***ing-gorgeous RX60 rims. These rims are incredible stable and it feels like they cut through the air.

These are the only rims so far I can manage to ride myself in the Dutch Mountains, weighing 70kg and with my lack of talent. The rim profile is so well thought of that windgusts seem not to affect the wheels. The just keep on rolling.

Beast Components rims are 100% handmade in Germany. They are not the lightest but they ride like a charm and are super strong with no weight limits.

Mission: build a lightweight but still strong wheelset for the Alps. Suitable for the tenecious Dutch Mountains is a bonus.

Result: a pair of the formidable Carbon-Ti hubs paired to a sleek VSW A35 SL PL pair of hoops.

Lightweight carbon rims, full Toray800 and a paintless finish. This results in a nice glow over the rims, with details of the craftmanship of the carbon lay-up being visible in a subtle manner. Removing the paint from the process ensures no flaws are hidden underneath the paint and shaves quite some weight off.

Carbon-Ti hubs are proven to be reliable and strong while still be one of the lightest in the market. One of the few brands using the reliable SKF bearings. And the color anodization is just 😘

The descents are covered by the best performing lightweight discs in the market: 6 bolt discs.

Zipp 3Zero Moto. What a strange name. Is it a motorcycle wheelset? No. It's an interesting piece of engineering. TLDR: the rim flexes following the surface in order to maintain grip. Although Zipp makes some nice hubs, there are always specific tools for specific jobs. asked me to rebuild these wheels with the best purpose tools:
- Son28 boost dynamo hub for the ultra distances he shreds
- the indestructible bolt on Pro4 as a rear hub.

Certainly no lightweight material but for sure bomb proof.

The new X series carbon rims from Duke are available for your custom dream build.

The X series rims are wider, stronger and all of that without adding any weight. The 23mm internally wide rims support your tires even better providing more volume and the possibility of riding with lower tire pressures.

All of this combines and enhances the attributes, handbuilt wheels are known for: stiff wheels for razor sharp cornering with confidence and trasmitting those watts but at the same time providing extra comfort for the long rides.

This wheelset is combined with road hubs from . Stealthy black, ligthweight, durable and with a titanium body (I am looking to all you Shimano riders out there). Laced up together with the trusted Sapim CX-Ray spokes and Sapim DSQ Brass ni***es.

A cracked rim and a broken spoke. That's how I got three wheels in: one set of sub 40mm high rims and one rear wheel with a 50mm+ high rim.

The lower rims got replaced by the VSW R38 SL rims with the excellent Grooved Graphene Brake track. These rims are amongst the best braking carbon rimbrake rims, when using the right brake pads (red Campa or Fulcrum carbon brake pads).

And at 1387gr for a pair laced around a set of DT350 hubs, those wheels are surprisingly light.

The higher rear rim got relaced with new Sapim CX-Sprint spokes as the rider is, despite his weight, a powerhouse.

Once again, investing in a good pair of hubs pays off on the long term.
