These Longbows are less than an inch wide, featuring an Osage belly, dense and resilient, with a purpleheart-bamboo core and a bamboo back. One bow is 72” and the other 71”, drawing 33 lbs and 36 lbs.

Both are quite narrow, with the widest point at the handle measuring just 25 mm. Combined with a few inches of reset, this slim design gives the bows a quick, lively feel in the shot.

Lately I’ve been deep into new builds, and this Orion bow is one of them. I experimented with decorative details on the limbs to give it an aged look. It draws incredibly smooth and really comes alive in the sunshine.
Specs: bamboo, wengé & horn — 40 lbs @ 31”, 66” nock to nock.

Stepping Outside the Comfort Zone with this one. Just finished up an Orion hornbow for a client who requested something a little different, orange colors to make it stand out for hunting purposes. At first, I wasn’t sure how the color choice would work with this style of bow, but I’ve got to admit… I’m really pleased with how it turned out!

Sometimes, stepping outside the usual design choices leads to something unexpectedly great. This one is a real head-turner.

What do you think? Would you go bold with color on a traditional bow?

My friend Jaap Koppedrayer gluing up a Yumi bow using rope and wedges. The whole bow is wound up in twine and wedges are inserted at the crossover points. The wedges make a tight bond and set the curves on the new bow. Not all bows have the same curvature and not all bows are shaped the same. There are slight nuances that determine the quality and properties of the bow. An ancient method that has stood the test of time.

How about those floorboards! Here we are selecting, grinding and flattening bamboo strips that make out the core of the bow. Not the same as bamboo flooring, but very sturdy and hard bamboo pieces. Each is selected, heat-treated and cut to match others. This ensures the core is full of powerfibers, you get a very resilient core which lasts a long time.

Back in the U.S. to work with some amazing looking bamboo, grown by Jaap Koppedrayer. The bamboo is sorted out as poles, split, cut and heated to remove the dirt and wax layer on the surface. They make for great bowbacking material and look amazing. It is always good to be at Jaap’s and Kay’s place, learning and sharing new ideas and skills. A living bowmaker legend.

Starting off the new year by stringing this +100lbs yumi bow. This Nami-sun is 221cm long and draws 105lbs or 42kg at 85cm. It is the heaviest yumi bow I have build thus far. It is very stable after a longer period of stringing and will be lacquered black with decorative rattan wrappings. ......—-}}}}————————> #弓道

Finished these arrows in classic black. 105cm with black turkey feathers, horn nocks and kyudo style points. The shafts are balanced with little weights in the end of the shaft to ensure they have the same balance point that makes the arrows fly the same trajectory.

It takes some heat and lots of patience to straighten these bamboo shafts. These matched shafts will be turned into Kyudo style arrows over 100cm long. By heating the bamboo over some coals the fibers become pliant enough to straighten the bamboo, important for a good arrowflight. Putting some fletches on them this weekend, will keep you posted.

Last weekend I had the pleasure to give a demonstration at the Chinese Archery Programme. Using the ropes and wedges technique I glued up a new Yumi and showed how it works. Got to meet some lovely people and got great feedback. Thanks for having me! Got two more shows coming up, soon to be announced!
