🦴 Calcium is best known for supporting strong bones, but that’s not its only job.
Calcium is an essential mineral involved in bone and teeth health, muscle contraction, nerve signalling, and normal heart function. It’s a nutrient your body relies on every day.
The good news? Most people can meet their calcium needs through food. Great sources include:
🥛 Milk, yoghurt, and cheese
🥬 Calcium-rich leafy greens
🥛 Calcium-fortified plant milks
🧈 Calcium-set tofu
🐟 Canned sardines and salmon with edible bones
If you don’t regularly consume enough calcium-rich foods, or have increased requirements, a supplement may be helpful. If you do take one, it’s generally best absorbed in doses of 500 mg or less at a time, and having enough vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium effectively.
Like any supplement, calcium should be used to fill a gap, not replace a balanced diet.
