May 2019 I was arriving in Costa Rica for my 200 hour YTT…
May 2026 and I’m here in Nicaragua, 7 years deep in this full time yoga teacher gig! 🤯
No matter how many hours of teaching are in between, honestly- I still feel like I’m just scratching the surface.
As I follow new teachers and see their excitement and fears around teaching, I want to share 5 lessons I’ve learned—
✨The wisest teachers are the ones still willing to be a student, to admit they don’t know everything. You will never “know enough.” But if each class you teach what you know, that’s enough.
Let your excitement for more knowledge drive you deeper into your yoga practice and evolve your offerings.
✨Don’t, I repeat, DON’T tie your worth to the number of students in your class. People’s schedules, wallets, and seasons of life dictate if they come to your class. Of course you may not be for everyone, but I promise you that you’re for someone!
I used to get so down on myself when only 1 or 2 people showed up, now I see it as a gift when someone gets a customized experience! They just hit the jackpot!
✨Living off a yoga income alone is HARD, not impossible, but HARD. I teach with ZERO overhead and I still live paycheck to paycheck.
Running a yoga business is much different than teaching yoga. If you don’t want to run a business, then get hired at a local studio and keep your day job. If you are going all in, know that it takes time and consistency to build something worth anything!
✨There will be times where you will question your morals and ethics and you’ll have to say NO. I’ve turned down private classes with men that gave me creepy vibes. I’ve said no to collaborations that wanted to take advantage of me without seeing my value.
Staying in integrity is more valuable than any amount of money, trust your gut!
✨Show up for your people. The treasure is found in the commUNITY you create. I love my students and they love me. Together we’ve created a safe and honest space to feel, to be, to share. That’s what keeps them around year after year.
If you aren’t in it to be of authentic service, well nobody cares if you can do a pretty pose.
Be you, and your people will find you. ♥️
