Tia’s first solo canoe portage 💫 😊! It’s safe to say that SHE V’s first backcountry canoe trip was a success. Our next one in late September has sold out and is waitlisted with 4 people. So we’ve decided to run another one September 18-20 💃! The Natla challenged me in more ways than one. Natla literally translates to “going fast” in the Dene language. It’s one of Canada’s most challenging remote whitewater rivers and I had 3 days of whitewater experience going into it 👀 (there were many risk management protocols in place to make this possible, including being in a guided group, having completed a swift water rescue course, pre-existing wilderness skills, walking my ass over the terrifying class IV rapids, etc). But naturally, I was still scared s**tless. Horrified actually. Hands down the most scared I have been for as long as I can remember. So why do it? Honestly, I’m not sure I know. But I do believe that we will never know our personal limits unless we test them. ➡️ (next caption)

This fear allowed me to tap into parts of myself that have felt dormant for a long time. It forced me to be extremely present. There were always a multitude of things I could think of that could go wrong, often with major consequences. It was very easy to live in the future— worry, panic, fear. But to let these thoughts control me would be to ruin my experience altogether, as well as others’ experiences. So I stayed present and took it one rapid at a time (mostly upright). ➡️

I had to get comfortable being uncomfortable (reallyyyy uncomfortable). We were dropped by a float plane hundreds of kilometers from any sort of civilization, so quitting never really felt like an option once I set foot on that plane. ➡️

I had to tap into my faith. It might sound 🥜 , but this was an experience where I had to trust that something much bigger than myself would offer protection. One of my favourite photographers talks about the concept of “thin spaces” — how we often feel most connected to something greater than ourselves when we have these “other-worldly” experiences. For me, this was a thin space. ➡️

I’m not the strongest paddler. If I attempted this on my own, it would have been grim. But I have a strong heart and a strong mind, which is ultimately what led me to this opportunity in the first place 🥲. I haven’t introduced myself since spring of 2025 when there were about 20 of you. Now we have nearly two extra zeros on that number 😯! So to all of the new faces, hi! I’m Lauri 🤗 the founder of SHE Ventures 🔎 Thank you for being here 🫶🏻 If you’re watching a reel or reading a post, it was likely me who made it. If you’re joining a trip, I will always be one of your guides (for now 😏). If you send a DM or an email, it’s me you’re talking to! If you swing by a market booth, I’m the gal behind the table. Want a sweater or a hat? I’m the merch minion! If there’s a website error, holla, I’m also the web developer 💻 I pour a huge amount of my time, energy, and heart into this little business. I believe that’s the only way a new company will survive past its infancy. You have to show up. Every day. Until you can afford to have someone else show up 😂. This business embodies everything that I am most passionate about— the outdoors, pushing your mental and physical limits, community, trying new things, exploration, mindfulness, the list goes on. If you’re the kind of person who wants a perfectly executed itinerary, a rehearsed speel at the start of your trip, or a guide who’s done the route 20+ times, SHE Ventures is not for you. But if you want a trip that feels like an informal hangout with new friends in some of nature’s most beautiful, remote spots, then come along. You can figure out the backcountry camping thing while I figure out this running-a-business thing ✌️ As a new business, I encourage (and graciously accept) feedback and suggestions (yes they can be negative too!), and appreciate anything you do to spread the word about SHE V. Nicaragua 💫 This retreat is for the adventurous, yet luxurious. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to appreciate the amenities that you could not always find in the 18-bed hostel dorms where I spent most of my 20s. But I still crave the same adventure. The same culture. The same backpacker bonds. If you’re thinking “maybe,” do it. If you’re scared to sign up solo, do it. If you fear that Nicaragua is unsafe, do it. If there’s anything that my life experiences have taught me it’s that the world is full of fear mongers. Some of my favourite backpacking trips have been solo. Some of my favourite travel destinations have been labelled as “unsafe” (it’s not by the way, we are literally at a bougee resort with round-trip airport transfer and pre-arranged local guides). Some of my greatest shifts in perspective have come from doing things that scare the s**t out of me. Everything we do will always have some element of risk and some level of discomfort. But beyond that is a version of yourself that’s waiting to be uncovered. And that version… is in Nicaragua… sipping a green juice on an empty beach on the pacific… as you unwind from your daily morning yoga session … and release a baby sea turtle into the ocean 👀

Been there, done that, and I’m telling you… it’s better with friends! And fellow SHE Venturers are just new friends 😌 If you prefer to solo to feel a sense of accomplishment, self-reflect, and challenge yourself in new ways…I get it! But I’ve learned that travelling in a large group also has its own challenges. Something is bound to not go according to plan when numbers increase, and honestly, that’s where the best learning happens (just remember to sign your waiver first 😊 😂).

Highland Trail 💫 I think this one might become a standing annual SHE V trip. My favourite part about running this business so far has been the CHILLIN’ 🧊 Literally. Not the hiking, paddling, administrative work, training, or anything of that nature. It’s been meeting so many incredible people that constantly have me thinking “wait….they should be the one leading this.” The number of new camp snacks that I’ve discovered over the past year from trip participants is out of this world. Overnight protein oats in the bear hang? Thank you SHE Venturers for teaching me your ways 🙇‍♀️. The cool thing about SHE V is that you’re not just learning from me. I’m learning from you. And we are all learning from each other 😌 and if you come on a trip with Nina, we will send her to fetch anything that you forgot in the car because she’s a speed demon 🏃‍♀️ 💨
