My name is Emmanuel Okon, born in Ikot Udofia, Nsit Atai in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, who subsequently relocated to Sweden. I am both a Swedish and bonafide Nigerian of Akwa Ibom origin, which gives me the right to speak either as a European or as an Akwa Ibomite.
Few years ago, I started a campaign for the need for the Government in my place of origin to be more transparent and accountable in their dealings pertaining money, citizens welfare etc,. which wasn’t received with open arms, because mostly, corrupt politicians benefit from every illegal activity that happens in Akwa Ibom State.
A while ago, I suggested the introduction of a Social Security Number system in Akwa Ibom State. A Social Security Number is a permanent and unique number, which means that the number is attached to and is used in identifying each person for a lifetime, and that no two personal identity numbers are identical.
The SSN will track and keep record of certain data such as;
- tax returns
- income statements
- Students bursary/loan
- Payment of pensions and gratuities
- hospitals & patiens
- income In markets for day traders tracking
- In schools
- At all LGAs
- Used by the police for record keeping, fight crime
- In Government programs
- and other documents
This is to promote accountability and transparency.
I want you all to know that vision is the only solution to our problems. As we plan to vote in a new government, let us be conscious of the fact that we need a system that’s transparent and accountable, and that will mean, a system that is fair to everyone, not just the Elites.
