"My child has been doing karate for two years."
That's wonderful.
But how do you know what they've actually learned?
Many parents trust that a karate uniform and a few coloured belts automatically mean progress. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.
Some school karate programs are excellent. Others lack structure, standards, and a proper curriculum.
We once had a student join our dojo wearing a green belt who could not perform basic kihon kata. Her mother was shocked because she genuinely believed her daughter was progressing well.
This is one of the reasons we created the Zen Budo Inter-Primary and Inter-Secondary School Karate Competitions.
These events allow parents and school owners to see students perform, compare standards across schools, and ensure children are receiving quality instruction.
In our latest blog post, we discuss why standards matter in school karate programs and how parents can make informed decisions.
