Why Your Staff Are Tired by 2PM (And Why It’s Not Their Fault)
Yesterday, I visited an office in Lagos and noticed something interesting.
By 2PM, almost everyone looked drained—yet the workday wasn’t even over.
It wasn’t laziness. It was something deeper.
Here’s what most companies are missing:
By 2PM in most offices, something changes.
You’ll notice it if you pay attention. The energy drops. Conversations become slower. People start checking their phones more often. Some are staring at their screens, but not really working.
At first glance, it’s easy to blame the staff.
“They’re not serious.”
“They lack discipline.”
“They’re not driven.”
But that’s rarely the real problem.
The truth is, most workplaces are designed in a way that drains energy, not supports it.
Let’s look at a typical day.
Many employees leave home early—especially in cities like Lagos—often skipping breakfast or eating something quick and unbalanced.
Then they sit for hours. Meetings, emails, more sitting. Minimal movement. Little hydration. Constant screen exposure.
By the time it’s 2PM, their bodies and brains are simply responding to how they’ve been treated all day.
Fatigue is not laziness.
It’s a signal.
And if organizations don’t address it, it quietly affects everything—productivity, decision-making, even workplace morale.
So what can be done?
Not something complicated.
Simple interventions work:
- Encouraging short movement breaks during the day
- Promoting hydration (many people are more dehydrated than they realize)
- Educating staff on energy-friendly eating habits.
These are not “extra activities.” They are performance tools.
Because at the end of the day, no matter how skilled your team is, if their energy is low, their output will be low too.
And energy—unlike motivation—is
something you can design for.
I help organizations improve staff energy and productivity through structured workplace wellness sessions.
If your team often struggles with fatigue, low energy, or reduced focus, I’d be happy to support.
