When I started U.S. Soccer,most Major League Soccer (MLS) teams were still holding open Tryouts to find talent in order to fill their rosters. A lot has changed in the last three years, and in order to get scouted for a professional soccer team in North America you might need to change your strategy.

The times of trying out for a professional team with good chances to make it are almost nonexistent. However, not everything is bad news. Nowadays pro teams have reserves squads that compete at a professional level in the third division of soccer in the United States and Canada; the United Soccer Leagues (USL). Though these teams are not allowed to complete in the U.S. Open Cup, players still get paid while they get “developed” for the MLS.

Teams in the North America Soccer League (NASL) have taken a similar approach, by creating U-23 teams that compete in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL). Though they still hold open Tryouts for their professional squad, it seems as if most franchises are shifting their focus at signing players at an earlier age and developing them for their senior team.

I’m personally excited about all these changes that happened in the last few years. In part, it make the career path for aspiring soccer players a bit more clearly. This structure gives young athletes a better idea of where to start and what to expect when planning their future.
