LAGOS 2026: SANWO-OLU INAUGURATES LOC FOR MAIDEN NATIONAL INTERMEDIATE GAMES, CHARGES COMMITTEE ON EXCELLENCE

In a major stride toward transforming grassroots sports development in Nigeria, the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially inaugurated the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the maiden edition of the 2026 National Intermediate Games (NIG).

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held at the Banquet Hall of the Lagos House in Marina on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, Governor Sanwo-Olu charged the committee members to approach their assignment with absolute dedication, professionalism, and a clear sense of purpose.

The Governor emphasized that the National Intermediate Games—scheduled to take place in Lagos in October 2026—serves as a vital launchpad for young, undiscovered athletes across the federation to showcase their talents and access pathways for elite sporting excellence.

“The games represent more than a sporting event,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated.

“They are an investment in the future of our young people, an avenue to strengthen national unity, and a vehicle to create sustainable opportunities through sports. Hosting this maiden edition reflects Lagos State's unwavering commitment to youth empowerment and social inclusion.”

The tournament is designed to foster social integration, national cohesion, and cultural exchange, bringing together thousands of young athletes from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Responding on behalf of the newly minted committee, the Co-Chairman of the LOC and Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, expressed gratitude to the Governor for the confidence reposed in the team. Ogunlende assured that the LOC would work tirelessly to deliver a world-class event that would positively impact millions of Nigerian youths and position them for global opportunities

Earlier, members of the committee led by the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, paid a courtesy visit to Sanwo-Olu and commended the Lagos State Government for its sustained investment in sports infrastructure and youth development.

Developmental sports in Lagos received a major lift on Saturday as prominent business leader and philanthropist,  Bella Disu hosted the finale of the maiden Bella Disu Open U-14 Junior Invitational Tennis Championship at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.

The tournament, organised to commemorate Disu’s 40th birthday, focused on discovering and developing young tennis talents through scholarships, equipment support, and competitive exposure.

Speaking at the event, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, described the initiative as a strong contribution to the state’s sports development agenda.

“Programmes like the Bella Disu Open create pathways for young people to discover and grow their talents within structured systems. Sustainable sports development must be driven by consistency, access, and opportunities,” he said.
