Poland Versus Nigeria: Shaibu Commends Super Eagles, Coaches and SSA Adeboye..Urges Greater Focus Until Final Whistle

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), His Excellency Comrade Philip Shaibu, has commended the Super Eagles of Nigeria, the technical crew, and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, for what he described as a successful and inspiring outing during the Unity Cup tournament and the international friendly match against Poland.

Shaibu, who was among the distinguished guests at the Nigeria–Poland Football Match Viewing Party held at the VIP Lounge of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, praised the team's performance, resilience, and determination, noting that the Super Eagles once again demonstrated the talent, fighting spirit, and football quality for which Nigeria is respected globally.

According to the immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo State, the Unity Cup initiative and the football diplomacy engagement involving Nigeria and Poland have further showcased the unifying power of sports and the importance of football as a tool for national pride, international cooperation, and youth inspiration.

He particularly applauded Hon. Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye for his commitment to grassroots sports development and for creating platforms that promote national unity, international friendship, and positive youth engagement in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

"The Super Eagles deserve commendation for their performance and for representing Nigeria with pride. I also congratulate the coaching crew for their efforts and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeyinka Adeboye, for his dedication to initiatives that continue to elevate the image of Nigerian sports both locally and internationally," Shaibu stated.

While celebrating the team's achievements, the NIS Director General stressed the need for improved concentration and discipline throughout the duration of matches, especially during additional time and crucial closing stages when games can easily be won or lost.

Reflecting on Nigeria's 2-2 draw against Poland, Shaibu observed that the Super Eagles had done enough to secure victory after taking the lead through Paul Onuachu's penalty before conceding a late equalizer.

"Football is a game of ninety minutes and beyond. The lesson from the Poland match is that players must remain focused and disciplined until the final whistle. At the highest level, a momentary lapse in concentration can change the outcome of a game."

He encouraged the players and coaching staff to treat the late equalizer as a learning opportunity and to continue building a team capable of competing successfully against the best football nations in the world.

"The quality is there, the talent is there, and the commitment is there. What is required is maintaining concentration from the beginning to the end of every match. If we continue on this path, Nigerian football will achieve even greater success in future competitions."

Shaibu further expressed confidence in the future of the national team, urging Nigerians to continue supporting the Super Eagles as they prepare for upcoming international assignments.

He reiterated the National Institute for Sports' commitment to supporting policies, programmes, and partnerships that will strengthen sports development, talent nurturing, and international sporting relations for the benefit of Nigeria and future generations of athletes.

The Permanent Secretary disclosed the establishment of the Lagos Institute of Disaster Management, which currently has strong Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with Lagos State University (LASU) and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

He also noted that these initiatives are being pursued under the developmental vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu which are designed to ensure that the disaster management structures and best practices developed by LASEMA can be replicated across Nigeria's 36 states.

NIS DG Shaibu Harps on Fitness as Sports Agencies Hold First Joint Aerobics in Abuja

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports, Philip Shaibu, has stressed the importance of physical fitness among stakeholders in Nigeria’s sports sector. Speaking in Abuja after participating in the first-ever joint aerobics session involving the Nigeria Football Federation, National Sports Commission, NIS, and the SSA on Grassroots Sports Development, Shaibu said sports administrators must lead by example by staying physically fit.

According to Shaibu, the weekly keep-fit exercise is designed to promote collaboration among sports agencies while also improving the physical and mental well-being of stakeholders. He noted that individuals responsible for training athletes must themselves maintain healthy lifestyles in order to effectively carry out their duties.

The NIS DG further emphasized that good health remains essential to productivity and success, especially within the sports sector where both physical and mental alertness are required. He added that prioritizing health is just as important as pursuing wealth, insisting that both should go hand in hand.

Also speaking at the event, the Director of Communications of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ademola Olajire, praised the initiative as impactful and refreshing. He commended the NIS for organizing the session and expressed hope that such exercises would continue regularly to strengthen unity, wellness, and cooperation across Nigeria’s sports ecosystem.

Shaibu Applauds NFF Over CAF Hosting Rights, Hails Eguavoen’s Legacy in Nigerian Sports

The Director General/CEO of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), H.E. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and its leadership for securing Nigeria’s hosting rights for the 48th Extraordinary CAF Meeting and Awards Ceremony scheduled for October 2026.

Shaibu described the development as a significant milestone for the country’s global sporting image, noting that it reflects Nigeria’s growing relevance in international football administration. “I must congratulate the NFF President and officials for this achievement. It is a great feat and a positive image boost for Nigeria. This is the way to go, Nigeria must be seen and heard on the global stage,” he said.

The NIS boss made these remarks while receiving former Super Eagles Coach and Technical Adviser, Austine Eguavoen, during a strategic meeting between the NIS and the Nigeria Football Federation at the Institute Boardroom .

Shaibu praised Eguavoen as “a moving encyclopedia in sports,” acknowledging his vast experience and contributions to football development in Nigeria.

He further emphasized the strategic role of the NIS, describing it as the engine room for sports development and coaching excellence in the country. According to him, meaningful progress in Nigerian sports requires sustained collaboration with the Institute.

Shaibu Reaffirms NIS Role as ‘Engine Room’ for Reviving Nigeria’s Sports Sector

The Director General/CEO of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), H.E. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has reiterated the critical role of the Institute in repositioning Nigeria’s sports sector, describing it as the “engine room” needed to drive sustainable development.

Shaibu made this known after the regular Tuesday and Thursday keep-fit exercise while receiving the Rudder Sports Management team, led by its President, Emmanuel Omijeh, at his office in Abuja.

He aligned the renewed focus on sports development with the vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the President’s passion for sports is evident in key appointments and policy direction aimed at revitalizing grassroots sports.

“Mr. President is a sports lover, just like many of us who follow football across different leagues weekly. Because of his deep interest in sports and grassroots development, he appointed a Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports to help nurture the next generation of athletes who will sustain Nigeria’s sports,” Shaibu said.

Describing the NIS as central to this vision, Shaibu lamented years of neglect that, according to him, stalled progress in the sector.

“You cannot start a car without an engine. The Nigerian sports sector went on holiday because the engine room, the NIS was neglected. Without building from the grassroots, there can be no sustainability,” he added.

The former Edo State Deputy Governor stressed that sustainable sports development must begin at the grassroots level, where young talents are discovered, nurtured, and developed into professionals.

Highlighting a major challenge in the system, Shaibu decried the lack of post-career planning for athletes, describing it as a “pandemic” that must be urgently addressed.

“We have seen too many retired athletes without anything to fall back on. Going forward, we must institutionalize exit plans for athletes at least two years before retirement. This will include training in coaching and sports management so they can transition smoothly,” he stated.

He further emphasized the need to create a culture where athletes are prepared for life after active sports, ensuring continuity within the system.

“We must maintain a pattern of training our players to become coaches after retirement so they can sustain the traditions of their various sports,” he said.

Drawing from personal experience, Shaibu recounted his contributions to sports development during his time in Edo State. He spoke about rehabilitating retired athletes by integrating them into the Edo State Sports Commission and empowering them for self-reliance.

He also shared a success story of talent discovery, recalling how he identified Imade Osarenkhoe during a novelty match at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

“He was a 100-level student when we signed him for Bendel Insurance. We paid his school fees, and he went on to graduate and serve with the club. For two seasons, he was the highest goal scorer in the Nigerian league, and today he is playing in the UAE, where he also emerged top scorer in his first season,” Shaibu said.

According to him, beyond sports, players under his watch were exposed to business ideas to help them invest wisely and secure their future.

“I know what we suffered as players, and I wouldn’t want the next generation to go through the same. Collaboration remains key to moving our sports forward,” he added.

Earlier, President of Rudder Sports Management, Emmanuel Omijeh, outlined the organization’s sports facilities and its vision to develop structured university sports systems across the country.

He noted that the initiative is designed to complement, not conflict with, the mission and vision of the NIS, adding that consultations with relevant stakeholders are already underway.
