Texts, emails, slacks, likes, comments. Not to forget, there are real-life interactions with your friends, family, and strangers too.
We live in a world of constant stimulation.
We tend to REACT to our environment, rather than consciously design what we want to see in our life. It can feel like an endless race, where you’re barely able to keep up.
Want to know the key to designing your life? It’s all about FOCUS.
There are three things that compete for our attention at any given time and steal our focus.
Pain.
Pleasure.
The Demands of Other People.
It’s our nature as human beings to avoid pain at all costs, so we tend to direct our attention to things we fear.
We also put a lot of energy into what gives us immediate pleasure (relief from pain) even if just for a second. That can be food, alcohol, or TV. Some behaviors are destructive, some are neutral.
And lastly, without focus, we can let the demands of other people control our lives.
We can get into what Tony calls a spin. Think of your life as a car driving down the road. We can spin out of control with our finances, with our kids, or with how we connect with our coworkers.
We never feel ready for these things when they surface. They’re jarring, they come at us fast, like an object in the road that shouldn’t be there or a sharp turn in the dead of night.
But the point is not to be reactive, but to be READY. Focus on WHERE you want to go, not what you fear.
The bottom line is don’t give energy to the things you don’t want in life.
Focus on designing the life you want, not reacting to the one you have.
