✝️WHY THE SIGN OF PEACE COMES BEFORE COMMUNION, NOT AFTER 😳🤔
_______________________

Many people think the Sign of Peace is just a friendly moment.

A chance to smile.
To greet neighbors.
To feel “welcome.”

But the Church did not place it there for social reasons.

She placed it there for salvation.

✝️Jesus Gave the Order, Not the Church

The placement comes straight from Christ Himself.

Jesus said:

“If you are offering your gift at the altar and remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there… first be reconciled.”

Notice the order.

Reconciliation first.
Offering after.

Communion is not just bread.
It is the Gift.

So before we approach the altar to receive Christ, the Church pauses and asks:

Are you at peace?

✝️Peace Is a Requirement, Not a Courtesy

The Sign of Peace is not about friendliness.

It is about readiness.

You cannot receive the Prince of Peace while clinging to hatred, bitterness, or division.

The Church is saying quietly:

Do not come forward divided.

✝️Why It Cannot Come After Communion

After Communion, the Sacrifice has explains already been received.

Placing peace afterward would suggest:

Receive Christ first, reconcile later.

That reverses the Gospel.

Christ demands the heart be prepared before the encounter.

✝️Peace Before Bread

Saint Paul warned the early Church:

“Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup unworthily brings judgment upon himself.”

Unforgiveness is not a small thing.

The Sign of Peace is the Church’s final examination of conscience before Communion.

✝️Why the Priest Prays for Peace First

The priest does not say:

“Let us greet one another.”

He prays:

“Lord Jesus Christ… look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace.”

Peace is given, not created.

Only Christ can give it.

✝️Not Horizontal, Vertical First

The peace we exchange is not:

“I like you.”

It is:

“I forgive you.”
“I am reconciled.”
“We are one Body.”

That is why the

TODAY'S REFLECTION
Our Lord Jesus is indeed the fulfillment of the law. This peter acknowledges at the council of Jerusalem; and that we are saved by grace and not by circumcision. James reaffirms what peter says and delivers the decision of the council of Jerusalem. In this narrative, we see the pre-eminence of peter as the head of the college of Apostles, a role still carried on today by pope Francis as the successor of peter, through the unbroken cord of Apostolic succession. Obviously it is an enormous responsibility to be the head of the one, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. As faithful of the church, we must continue to pray for the Pope and all church leaders for the grace of final perseverance, and commit them daily to the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of the church and queen of the apostles.

✝️ WHY DID ABRAHAM LIE ABOUT SARAH… AND GOD STILL BLESSED HIM? 😳 THE DETAIL MANY PEOPLE MISS

This story unsettles people.

A man chosen by God… lies.
He puts his wife at risk… twice.
And yet… God still protects him and blesses him.

So the question comes naturally:

Did Abraham get away with sin?
Does God reward deception?
Or is something deeper happening beneath the surface?

The answer is not comfortable… but it is powerful.

Let’s go slowly.

✝️ 1. ABRAHAM DID NOT LIE OUT OF WISDOM… BUT OUT OF FEAR

Twice in Scripture, Abraham says:

“She is my sister.” (Genesis 12:13; 20:2)

Why?

“Because I thought… they will kill me because of my wife.” (Genesis 20:11)

This is not strategy.

This is fear speaking.

The same man who heard God’s promises…
Still struggled to trust God’s protection.

This is the first shock:

Faith and fear can exist in the same person.

✝️ 2. THE HALF-TRUTH THAT BECAME A FULL PROBLEM

Abraham was not inventing something entirely false.

Sarah was actually his half-sister (Genesis 20:12)

But here is the danger:

A half-truth used to deceive… becomes a full lie.

He used truth…

To hide reality.

And that is often more dangerous than a direct lie.

✝️ 3. GOD INTERVENED, NOT BECAUSE ABRAHAM WAS RIGHT, BUT BECAUSE GOD IS FAITHFUL

When Abraham lied, Sarah was taken into another man’s house:

First in Egypt (Genesis 12)
Then with King Abimelech (Genesis 20)

This should have destroyed everything.

But instead:

God steps in.

He afflicts Pharaoh.
He warns Abimelech in a dream:

“You are a dead man… she is a man’s wife.” (Genesis 20:3)

This is critical:

God did not protect Abraham because Abraham was innocent.
God protected Sarah because His covenant was at stake.

The promise of a future child…
Could not be compromised.

✝️ 4. GOD’S PROMISE IS STRONGER THAN HUMAN FAILURE

God had already said:

“Through Sarah, your descendants will come.” (Genesis 17:19)

So even when Abraham acted out of fear…

God preserved the promise.
