2. Kidneys: when they fail to filter waste, protein spills into urine and water follows. This happens in kidney failure.

3. Liver: when severe permanent scaring (cirrhosis) occurs, it destroys the liver's ability to make albumin. Albumin is the protein that keeps fluid inside your blood vessels. Without albumin, fluid escapes into the tissue spaces and pools there. It settles at your feet because of gravity.

What is shown in the diagram is called pitting oedema: the type that when you press your finger into that swollen skin, it leaves a dent.

A simple blood test, urine dip, and heart trace can tell your doctor almost everything they need to know.

So the one thing I will tell such a person is: See a doctor.
