WHEN THE JOB TITLE DISAPPEARS

For more than two decades, I had an answer whenever someone asked:
"What do you do?"
I worked in banking.
I had a role.
A title.
A place I belonged.
Then one day, that chapter ended.

Suddenly, a simple question became surprisingly difficult:
"What do you do now?"
Looking back, I realize the challenge was not losing the job.
The challenge was losing an identity I had carried for many years.

Many professionals underestimate how much of their identity becomes attached to their careers.
Until the career changes.
Then they discover that retirement is not only a financial transition.
It is also an identity transition.

One of the most important things I learned was this:
Your job is something you do.
It is not who you are.

What if your next chapter became your best chapter?
Not because it was easy.
Not because it was perfect.
But because it allowed you to grow in ways you never expected.

When I left banking, I thought I was leaving something behind.
What I didn't realize was that I was also moving toward something.
New lessons.
New challenges.
New opportunities.
A new version of myself.

Today, I believe many professionals underestimate what is still possible for them.
They look back at what they have accomplished.
But they struggle to imagine what they could still accomplish.

As you reflect today, ask yourself:
What if your most meaningful contribution is still ahead of you?

ADVICE TO MY 51-YEAR-OLD SELF

If I could sit down with the woman who had just left banking at 51, here is some of what I would tell her.

I would tell her:
Slow down.
You do not have to figure everything out immediately.
I would tell her:
Do not mistake activity for progress.
Being busy is not the same thing as moving forward.
I would tell her:
Do not start a business simply because you feel pressure to do something.
Take time to think.
Take time to learn.
Take time to prepare.
I would tell her:
Find guidance earlier.
You do not have to walk the journey alone.
And finally, I would tell her:
The uncertainty you feel today will not last forever.
One day you will look back and realize that this difficult period was preparing you for something important.

WHAT SUCCESS MEANS TO ME TODAY

If you had asked me 20 years ago what success meant, my answer would have been very different.
Back then, success was connected to:
• Career growth
• Promotions
• Professional recognition
• Responsibility

Today, my definition has changed.
Success now means:
• Building something valuable
• Contributing to others
• Having the freedom to choose how I spend my time
• Continuing to learn and grow
• Doing work that feels meaningful

One of the surprises of life is that our definition of success evolves.
And that's okay.
In fact, it should.
The things that mattered to me at 35 are not exactly the same things that matter to me today.
As you move through different seasons of life, your definition of success may need to evolve too.

THE RIGHT BUSINESS FILTER

After years of trial, error, and learning, I realized something important:
Not every business is suitable for every person.
That realization eventually led me to create what I call The Right Business Filter™.

Before committing to a business idea, I now ask questions like:
• Does it fit my skills?
• Does it fit my resources?
• Does it fit my lifestyle goals?
• Does it solve a real problem?
• Is there demand?
• Can I manage the risks?
• Does the cash flow make sense?

Years ago, I did not have a framework for evaluating opportunities.
Today, I would never make a major business decision without one.
A good business idea should survive careful examination.

WHY I NO LONGER BELIEVE IN "HOT" BUSINESS IDEAS

Every year there is a new business trend.
Someone is making money from it.
Everyone starts talking about it.
People rush in.
A few succeed.
Many struggle.
Why?
Because a good business idea and the right business idea are not always the same thing.

Looking back, one of the most valuable lessons I learned was this:
You should never choose a business simply because other people are succeeding in it.
You should choose a business that aligns with:
• Your strengths
• Your resources
• Your interests
• Your goals
• Your reality

The business that changed my life was not the most exciting business in Nigeria.
It was cashew farming.
But it fit who I was, what I wanted, and how I wanted to live.
That made all the difference.
Sometimes the best opportunity is not the most popular one.
It is the one that fits you best.

THE MOST DANGEROUS BUSINESS QUESTION

When professionals start thinking about business, they often ask:
"What business is profitable?"
At first glance, that seems like a smart question.
But over the years, I have come to believe it is often the wrong question.

A better question is:
"What business is right for me?"
A business can be profitable and still be wrong for you.
It can demand skills you do not enjoy using.
It can require a lifestyle you do not want.
It can expose you to risks you are uncomfortable carrying.
It can consume the freedom you hoped retirement would bring.

One of the biggest lessons I learned is that choosing a business is not simply a financial decision.
It is a life decision.
The goal is not just to build a profitable business.
The goal is to build a business that fits the life you want to create.

Today I know that slowing down to think is not weakness.
It is wisdom.

BEFORE YOU INVEST ANOTHER NAIRA

If I could sit down with every professional preparing to start a business, there are a few questions I would ask before they invested a single naira.

Questions like:
• Who exactly is your customer?
• What problem are you solving?
• How will customers find you?
• How will the business make money?
• What risks have you identified?
• How long can you survive without significant income?
Years ago, I didn't ask enough of these questions.
I paid for that lesson.

Today, I believe that thoughtful questions are among the most valuable business tools available.
Good questions reveal blind spots.
Good questions reduce risk.
Good questions improve decisions.
Sometimes the difference between success and failure is not the answer.
It is the question.

WHY GOOD PEOPLE MAKE EXPENSIVE BUSINESS MISTAKES

One of the biggest myths in business is that only careless people make costly mistakes.
I don't believe that.

I think many expensive mistakes are made by:
• Intelligent people
• Hardworking people
• Honest people
• Experienced people
The issue is often not intelligence.
The issue is preparation.

After leaving banking, I made mistakes that cost me nearly ₦5 million.
Not because I was careless.
Not because I lacked discipline.
But because I was making decisions in an area where I lacked experience.
That experience eventually led me to create what I now call the Pre-Investment Readiness Framework™.
Its purpose is simple:
Help people identify risks before they become regrets.
Because prevention is usually cheaper than recovery.
