CAN A GIFT YOU NEVER USED... COME BACK?

A dear friend of mine asked me something recently while studying Matthew 25 that I think a lot of us have quietly wondered too:

"The question is in the line of, If a talent left unused can be lost, does that mean I could have lost mine? And is it even possible for someone to have no gifts at all?" Of course I rephrased, these weren't her exact words.

Let's sit with this honestly.

In the parable, the servant who buried his one talent didn't lose it because it disappeared. He lost it because he never engaged it. Fear made him bury what was meant to be invested. The master didn't take something that was never there. He took back something that was never used.

That's the real warning in Matthew 25. Not "you might not have a gift." But "your gift was never meant to sit still."

So, is it possible to be without gifts and talents at all?

No! I don't believe that's possible. And this is not because I'm being generous with the definition of "gift" but because of who gave it. The Bible says that every good gift comes from God (James 1:17), and He doesn't make exceptions. He didn't create anyone empty-handed.

Some gifts are loud and obvious e.g singing, teaching, leading.
Others are quiet and easy to overlook e.g discernment, comfort, patience, the ability to make people feel safe. However, quiet doesn't mean absence.

Now, can a gift that's been buried, neglected, or unused for years come back?

I believe yes. What looks "lost" is often just dormant, not destroyed. A muscle that hasn't been used gets weak, not gone. The same grace that gave you the gift in the first place is more than able to reawaken it, but reawakening usually requires the very thing that was missing before: USE! Small, consistent, imperfect use.

You don't recover a buried gift by waiting for a dramatic moment. You recover it the same way the other two servants grew theirs by taking the risk of using what you have, even in small measure, instead of protecting it out of fear.

So if you've been wondering whether it's too late, or whether you were simply skipped over when gifts were being handed out, you weren't. You just haven't fully found or reactivated yours yet.

That's not the same as not having one.

What's a gift or talent you know you've had, but haven't used in a while? What's kept you from picking it back up? Tell me below, let's talk about it. 👇

Confession: I used to think contentment meant settling, giving up on wanting more.
Now I know contentment just means I'm not miserable while I wait for more. I can be at peace today and still be moving toward tomorrow.
What have you been postponing your peace for?

For years I told myself, "I'll finally relax once things settle down."

Things never fully settled down. There was always a next thing to solve, chase, or wait for.

One day I realized I had spent so many actual good seasons feeling anxious about the next one, that I missed being present in the one I was already in.

I had to learn, on purpose, to be grateful in the middle of the story, not just at the ending.

That didn't mean I stopped believing for more. It just meant I stopped postponing my peace until "more" arrived.

Contentment isn't the absence of desire. It's peace in the waiting.

Many of us postpone our joy telling ourselves we'll be happy once the job comes, the relationship starts, the breakthrough arrives. Then we get there, and immediately start postponing again for the next milestone.

Paul said he learned to be content in any and every situation. Learned meaning contentment is a skill you build, not a feeling you wait to stumble into.

You can still be believing God for more, and have peace right now. Those two things aren't in conflict.

Comment "PRESENT PEACE" if you're choosing contentment today instead of waiting for "someday."

Self awareness requires observation!

So don't ignore yourself, don't live CARELESSLY, be observant about how you react, and act.

it will help you alot.

Confession: I used to feel guilty on the days I didn't feel spiritually "on fire."
Now I know faithfulness isn't about how intense you feel. It's about whether you showed up anyway. Some of my most faithful days felt the most ordinary.
What's something you keep doing consistently, even on days you don't feel like it?

For a long time, my prayer life depended entirely on how I felt.

Inspired? I prayed for an hour. Discouraged? I skipped days, weeks and even months without noticing.

Then I made a simple decision: 15 minutes, every morning, no matter what. Some mornings it felt powerful. Most mornings it felt ordinary. But I kept showing up.

Months later, I realized something had shifted and it is not because of one dramatic encounter, but because of all those "ordinary" mornings I almost skipped. Guess what, I still skip sometimes but I get back on as GOD gives me grace.

Motivation is a feeling while Discipline is a decision!

Feelings are unreliable, they show up some days and disappear on others. If you wait for motivation before you pray, show up, or work toward what matters, you'll be inconsistent by design.

Discipline doesn't ask "do I feel like it." It asks "did I say I would do this." Then it follows through regardless of the answer to the first question.

This is how spiritual growth actually happens! Not through occasional bursts of inspiration, but through small, repeated obedience on ordinary days nobody's clapping for you.

Comment "DECIDED" if you're choosing consistency over feelings this week.

Confession: I used to think forgiving someone meant I had to pretend what they did wasn't that serious.
Now I know forgiveness and accountability can exist together. I can release the weight and still have boundaries. Those aren't opposites.
Have you ever confused forgiveness with pretending something didn't hurt?
