ANSSI: Cultivating Athletic Excellence in Anambra and Nigeria

By Chinonso Onyeanusi of Sports Commission

Anambra Sports Solution Initiative (ANSSI) has emerged as a pivotal force in nurturing athletic talent in Nigeria, with a significant proportion of the country's representatives at the African U-20 Championships having competed at ANSSI. Since its inception in 2022, the initiative has evolved into a talent pipeline for Nigerian athletics, producing athletes who occupy key fixtures in the country's athletic scene.

Speaking on the impact of ANSSI, Chairman of Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC), Mr. Patrick Estate Onyedum, highlighted the initiative's success in grooming athletes who have gone on to represent Nigeria at international competitions. A shining example is Miracle Oluebube, a product of ANSSI, who recently completed a brilliant sprint double at MTN CHAMPS Calabar, winning both the Junior Girls' 100m and 200m titles.

Oluebube's performance was remarkable, clocking 11.67s in the 100m despite a headwind of -1.3, and storming to victory in the 200m with a season's best of 23.47s. Her teammate, Rosemary Nwankwo, finished 2nd in both events, setting a new personal best of 23.79s in the 200m. This feat makes Oluebube the first athlete in MTN CHAMPS history to hit a world champs qualifying standard twice, solidifying her position as a rising star in Nigerian athletics

Onyedum praised ANSSI's grassroots approach to discovering and developing athletic talent, stating that it exemplifies the future of Anambra athletics. The initiative's success has not only brought pride to Anambra State but also contributed significantly to Nigeria's athletic landscape.

Anambra Has Broken Jinx, Maintained Consistency In Sports - Sports Commission Chairman, Onyedum

In the view of Patrick-Estate Onyedum, the Chairman, Anambra State Sports Development Commission (ASSDC), the state has maintained steady growth in sports over the past four years under the administration of Chukwuma Soludo, surpassing its previous achievements and maintaining consistency in its policies and outings at national events.

He spoke during an exclusive interview with ABS at his office in Awka.

Onyedum affirmed that through deliberate reforms, the commission has been repositioned to achieve great feats, revealing that the reintroduction of school sports has helped in nurturing talents and positioning them for greater accomplishments, noting that previous state records were surpassed during the Youth Games at Asaba in 2022 with the winning of eight gold medals, as well as several silver and bronze medals.

He explained that the school sports programme, at its inception in 2023, had 200 schools participating and was categorized based on age, covering both primary and secondary school participants, beginning from the inter-community level to the local government level, then to the zonal level and culminating in the finals in Awka, pointing out that both male and female athletes participated in twelve games, namely football, athletics, tennis, table tennis, among other sports, while the wife of the state Governor, Nonye Soludo, has supported female athletes who excel in games and competitions in the state with scholarships and gifts.

Those discovered through the school sports programme have been awarded scholarships nationwide and abroad, with some invited to the national team, including Oluebube, Chigozie Nwankwo, Adaeze Eze, and Lucy Nwankwo, the ASSDC Chairman noted, adding that the Traders’ Games were also reintroduced to promote conviviality among traders and discover talents.
