Hello September 🌿🏆

August was a month of momentum.

From the 37th CVCNU Annual General Assembly Conference at the University of Ilorin to the launch of the IDUS Nigeria 10KM Challenge, preparations for the 12th FASU Games and continued sporting activities across Nigerian campuses, university sport continued to move forward.

The month also saw Nigerian universities prepare for continental competition, with LASUED, LASU, UNIZIK, LAUTECH and UNIJOS set to represent Nigeria at the 12th All-Africa University Games in Cairo.

Now, September takes us from preparation into participation.

The month brings the 12th FASU Games in Cairo, where Nigerian universities will join institutions from across Africa in competition and continental collaboration.

At home, attention turns to the International Day of University Sport on 20 September, with NUGA's IDUS Nigeria 10KM Challenge bringing students, staff, alumni, community members and persons with disabilities together through movement, health, inclusion and university pride. Participants will run or walk, track their activities through Strava and take part in a nationwide celebration of university sport.

The NUGA Runners Club will continue to build that community beyond the challenge and connect university runners across Nigeria through Strava.

Across our university sports community, the focus remains on creating more opportunities for competition, participation, leadership, wellness and development on campus, nationally and across the continent.

University Sports Continue to Thrive Across Nigerian Campuses

University sports activities continued across Nigerian campuses in August 2026, with institutions and student leaders organising football competitions, fitness initiatives, esports tournaments and other sporting activities that created opportunities for participation, competition and campus engagement.

Recent highlights include:

At Federal University Otuoke (FUO), the 2026 FYB Inter Faculty Football Competition ran from 8–18 August, following the Freshers’ Cup launched earlier in June.

At the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the 7KM Unity Walk for Progress, Walk for Life, Not Drugs held in Ebonyi State on 24 August promoted healthy living, unity, discipline and a drug-free society.

At Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, the inaugural All Departmental Cup brought together 18 departmental teams, with the competition running from 24 August to 12 September.

At Federal University Lokoja, the 2026 SUG Games concluded on 26 August with the closing ceremony and football finals at the Felele Campus Stadium.

At the University of Calabar, preparations are underway for the Malabor Champions League, organised by the Students Union Government through the Office of the Director of Sports.

At Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI), the BOUESTI Sport Festival 2026 continued with sporting activities celebrating the creativity and culture of Ikere Kingdom. BOUESTI FC also played FUOYE Dazzlers FC in a 2–2 pre-season fixture.

At the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), student sporting initiatives expanded beyond traditional competition, with eFootball Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile and Fantasy League activities offering students opportunities for gaming, competition and engagement.

These activities reflect the continued development of university sports across Nigeria, creating more spaces for competitive sport, fitness, esports, leadership, student participation and community engagement.

🏅 Monday Men |

Celebrating discipline, resilience, and the men shaping the story of sport through performance, leadership, and consistency.

Today, we spotlight Victor Osimhen, Nigerian professional footballer and one of Africa’s leading strikers, whose journey from Lagos to the highest levels of European football reflects determination, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

Born on December 29, 1998, in Lagos, Osimhen began his football journey with Ultimate Strikers Academy before moving to Europe in 2017. His career took him through Wolfsburg, Charleroi and Lille before he joined Napoli in 2020.

At Napoli, Osimhen became a central figure in the club's historic 2022/23 Serie A title-winning campaign, scoring 26 league goals and finishing as the league's top scorer. He became the first African player to win the Serie A Golden Boot.

His journey continued with Galatasaray, where he initially joined on loan before making a permanent move in 2025. In his first full season with the club, he helped Galatasaray win the Turkish league title, following a 2024/25 season in which he scored 37 goals across competitions and won the league's top-scorer award.

Beyond the numbers, Osimhen's story speaks to perseverance — navigating setbacks, changing leagues and environments, and continuing to establish himself at the highest level.

As his personal motto reminds us:

“My whole life has been a struggle, but I always come out on top.”

📢 NUGA Updates | IDUS Nigeria 10KM Challenge

As the global university sports community marks 10 years of the International Day of University Sport (IDUS) on 20 September 2026, the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) invites universities and their communities across Nigeria to join the IDUS Nigeria 10KM Challenge.

Aligned with FISU’s global 10 Years, 10 Kilometres movement, the challenge carries the theme:

One University Community.
Run Together. Grow Together.

On 20 September 2026, students, academic and non-teaching staff, alumni, community members and persons with disabilities can complete 10KM by running, walking or combining both — from their campuses or wherever they are in Nigeria.

For persons with disabilities, an adapted 3–5KM category will be available.

Participation will be tracked through Strava. Participants should join both the official NUGA Runners Club and the IDUS Nigeria 10KM Challenge before taking part.

🏆 University recognition categories include:

Self-care is not always about slowing down. Sometimes, it is about taking a moment to organise your week and prepare yourself for what lies ahead.

For students and student-athletes, the week can quickly become busy with lectures, labs, tests, assignments, training sessions, travel and other responsibilities on and off the field. Taking time on Sunday to plan ahead can help reduce stress and bring more clarity to the days ahead.
