But September is not only about where your child will go. It is also about what kind of thinking they will practise this term.

We'll never forget this. A father dropped his son off at our Saturday class in Kubwa and said to me, laughing but not really laughing: "Good luck with this one. His Wahala is too much."

The boy was bouncing. Literally. Touching everything. Asking questions.
Fifteen minutes into the class, he was still. Not because I told him to be. Because the board had his attention. Fully. His whole body went quiet and his brain switched on.

His dad came back an hour later and found him in the middle of a game, chin in his hands, thinking. We watched the man's face change. He didn't say much. Just: "Okay."

He's brought him every Saturday since.
We tell this story a lot because we think parents carry a version of their child in their head that isn't always accurate. They've decided "this is how my child is." But sometimes you just haven't found what holds them yet.

There's a girl in our weekend class. We won't say her name but her mum will know.

For the first three weeks, she didn't say a single word. She came in, sat down, stared at the board. Didn't ask questions. Didn't talk to the other children. Her mum told me she was like that everywhere. "She's shy. She won't participate."

I just let her be.

Week four, she beat the boy sitting next to her. He's been here for two months. She didn't scream. She didn't celebrate. She just looked up at me and smiled. Small. Quiet. Like she'd been waiting to prove something to herself and she finally did.

That smile has been there every Weekend since

Some children don't need noise to grow. They just need a space where nobody is rushing them. Where they can move at their own pace and still matter.

We think about her mum sometimes. How she probably spent months worrying that her daughter was "too quiet." That something was wrong. That she needed to "come out of her shell."

Nothing was wrong. She was just waiting for the right environment.

Your child is not slow.
This is for parents who are worried about their child's performance in school.
We know the teacher may have said something. We know the report card doesn't look the way you want. We know you've paid for extra lessons and private tutors and it still doesn't seem to change.

But before you decide there's something wrong with your child, let me ask you this: has anyone ever taught them HOW to think? Not what to think. HOW.

Because here's what happens in some schools, they give them information and say, "Remember this for Thursday." And some children are fine with that. But others, maybe your child, need to understand WHY. They need to wrestle with the problem. They need to feel the logic before it sticks.

Those children aren't slow. They're just in a system that rewards one type of brain and ignores another.

When these same children sit at a chess board, something shifts. Because chess doesn't say "memorise this." Chess says: "Here's a problem. No one is telling you the answer. Think."

And suddenly the child who "couldn't focus" is sitting in concentration for 30 minutes. The child who "gave up easily" is asking to play again after losing. The child who seemed behind is thinking 3 moves ahead.

They weren't broken. They just needed a different kind of training.

If you've tried everything else and you're still worried, bring them. Let them sit at a board. You might be surprised by the child you see.

A question we get from parents all the time: "Is chess actually improving my child's grades?" We've learned to ask something back: "Before the grades, what else have you noticed?"

And usually there's a pause. Then:
"He doesn't cry when homework is hard anymore."
"She sits longer before giving up."
"He asks why things work instead of just copying answers."
"She tried to teach her younger cousin a chess opening last weekend."

These parents were so focused on waiting for the report card to change that they almost missed what was already changing right in front of them.

Here's what I've seen over and over: the grades DO come. But they come after the behaviour shifts. And the behaviour always shifts first.

A child who can sit with difficulty. A child who doesn't panic when they don't immediately know the answer. A child who finds satisfaction in thinking something through.

If you've enrolled your child in anything and you're wondering "is this working?" stop watching obvious results for now. Watch them at home. Watch how they respond to hard things. Watch how long they sit before they give up.

That's where you'll see it first.

5 reasons parents choose schools that offer chess (and quietly leave schools that don't):

1. It answers the "what makes your school different?" question immediately:
