Today is International Day for Street Children.
On this day we, OCEAN WORLD Empowerment Foundation raise our voices for millions of children who live and work on the street and who deserve so much more than survival. Globally, estimates suggest that up to 150 million street children exist, facing extreme hardships, abuse, and a lack of shelter and proper care .
In Nigeria, the picture is equally alarming. UNICEF and related studies indicate that nearly 10% of the countryβs 69 million children are vulnerable, with millions orphaned or forced into street life due to poverty, family breakdown, and inadequate social protection . In Abia State, particularly in busy commercial centers like Aba; child street hawking is a common reality. Research in Aba metropolis reveals that severe poverty is a driving force behind these activities, with studies reporting that as many as 93% of 8 to 17 year olds are working on the streets to support their families .
Street children in Nigeria often miss out on education, face exploitation, and suffer from health challenges; from poor nutrition and unsafe drinking water to exposure to physical and sexual abuse. Every child has the right to a safe home and opportunities to thrive. We must challenge stereotypes and work together to build a future where every child is protected, educated, and treated with dignity.
Letβs join hands, go beyond words and support concrete actions for legal inclusion, improved housing, and social protection for these vulnerable young people.
