The 3 biggest deals of my career in the next 3 weeks, and today, everything that could go wrong, went terribly wrong.
Before I departed my house, I said to my wife, "If all of these go through, with all of these moving parts, they MUST be MEANT to be, because no matter if I try my hardest and smartest, I couldn't do this only on my own. This will take Divine Intervention to make it all work."
She and I discussed how we can only work our hardest on the one thing we can at that time, and then the next, against what appear to be overwhelming responsibilities, and then pray for the best.
So, the day began, and one proverbial tree after another fell in my path. How does one know if the obstacle in front of you is a sign that you're struggling against what's not supposed to happen? Only by jumping over it, one after another. So, up and over I went.
As soon as I applied every ounce of my effort, whether that sprinting from one appointment across to another, or innovating a solution to what seemed like an impossible puzzle, or flat out sincerely asking for help from a complete stranger, suddenly, a door would open in a totally surprising way.
At one point into the day, I had to laugh, because tree after tree would fall in my path, and so, no matter that people would stare at my obvious effort, I'd climb over it; only to find someone waiting for me on the other side at the EXACT moment that I reached the ground with PRECISELY the component I needed to complete that task. It was so elegant that I crazily smirked while I was sprinting down the city streets.
My teacher once said that you need 3 things for anything to happen:
1. You need EFFORT - a whole lot of it, more than you think, and more than you think you can.
2. You need TIMING - and connected to 1&3, as the right time only comes after you've given out every ounce of effort you could possibly expend... but...
3. You also need GRACE, for without Divine Intervention, even superhuman effort won't help you, because there are an inconceivable amount of moving parts in the Heavenly Design.
But if you expend extraordinary effort, then at the end of it, may be the perfect timing for something new, and incredible to unfold.
The irony of knowing the difference between the superhuman effort mandatory to achieve any significant goal, and struggling against forces that show you that the time is not right and it's just not meant to be, is that you have to fail, fail, fail, fail, fail and keep failing.
And sometimes, Grace makes the Timing happen.
I believe it's like the difference between Hunger and a Craving: when you're truly hungry for a missing nutrient, you can resist; however, it will only get worse, and eventually you know that you must go get that nutrient; but when you resist a craving, over time, you suddenly realize it has stopped, and you feel great. But the only way to know the difference is to do it.
Today was another gift, not because more of these moving parts aligned in their most Divine way for "my" goals, but because it was totally obvious from the symphony of moving pieces that all I could do was strive my absolute hardest and smartest, and let God deal with the rest.
Whatever happens, no matter how it unfolds, is in my and everyone's best interest. There's peace inside that tornado.
