How does Kinesiology support tape work?

KT Tape can be used to help improve muscular firing and contraction patterns, normalising muscular tone and improved athletic performance.

Inhibition and pain management

For optimal strength, overlap each layer of strapping tape by 1/2 ideally, bumaybe down to 1/3.

The amount you use depends upon the amount of support you need. Too little will provide inadequate support to the joints, too much may reduce the mobility of surrounding muscles.

Sometimes the volume of tape may also cause a problem if an athlete has to wear other clothing or sports apparatus over the taping. For example, often as issue for athletes who have their finger or wrist taped then having to apply a glove as a soccer goal keeper or cyclist.

The premium taping will often mean you may use less tape as less surface area is required for the same effect.

Often flexing the muscles when applying tape will ensure the correct tension.

Pinching skin below tape for a few seconds. Release should see skin return to normal colour.

Conversely loose tape with not adequately support the joint.

If it is too tight, then it could cut off the blood or nerve supply.

If numbness and tingling result, remove strapping tape and reapply with reduced tightness.

Never sleep with tape on at night unless instructed to do so my practitioner.

Joints are should be strapped in their "at rest" or 'neutral position.

Do not traction the limb when pulling against the tape to apply.

Its best to hold the roll in one hand and pull the required length of tape with the other hand. Often you can use this length if required again as a template for a similar length.

Gently apply the required number of correct length strips.

Never try to tear the tape off by tugging on the skin, but use a pair of tape scissors.

Avoid creases and tape edges along joint lines as these often cause rubbing or cuts.

Tape sticks best to itself so use anchors where possible.

Ideally before you apply tape, it is best to prepare your skin for maximum adhesion and effect.



If you have excessive hair, wet-shaving the area12-24 hours before earlier is beneficial.

Cleaning the application area by using a tape remover or alcholol swab removes the body oil.

Covering any rashes or broken skin with a non-stick wound pad available at chemists.

Applying an underwrap to the area which such as a hypo-allergenic fixomil or similar adhesive underwrap to protect tape-sensitive skin.

What Kinesio Tape Is Used For
Shin Splints: This kind of pain happens when you overload the muscles in the front of your shin, causing inflammation in the muscle, tendon, and bone. Tape from just below the outside of your knee to just beneath the base of your big toe, then tape additional strips the length of the full width of your shin laterally over your pain points.

Knee Pain: One of the most common issues for runners, knee pain typically stems from imbalances or weak glutes. Anchor two strips on the quad muscle and then run them down the right and left of the knee cap to create a teardrop shape, Wickham says. Then place one strip running across the other two below the knee cap.

Plantar Fasciitis: This occurs when you overload the connective tissue that runs from your heel to the base of your toes, resulting in heel pain. Tape on strip down the bottom of the foot, the another strip crossing the first on the arch area of the bottom of the foot, Wickham says.

Achilles Tendon Pain: Too much stress can tighten and overwork the large tendon connecting the two major calf muscles—the gastrocnemius and soleus—to the back of the heel bone. Tape one strip starting at the mid-calf down to the bottom of the foot, then cross another strip over the back of the heel/ankle, Wickham says.

General Muscle Pain: If you’re experiencing general soreness or want more support for a muscle, you can use two strips (or cut one strip into a “Y” shape) to border the area, Lou says.

Swelling: If you rolled or tweaked a joint, and it is inflamed, cut small projections off the anchor point of the tape (so it looks like an octopus) and lay it with no stretch over the swollen area,” Lou says.
