Degenerative Civilization Disease – Scoliosis
Scoliosis is not simply “a crooked spine.”
It is a compensatory adaptation — the body’s response to an environment it can no longer properly adapt to.
Daniel Lieberman once referenced anthropological and skeletal research showing that before industrialization, scoliosis was extremely rare in human history. Through morphological and imaging analysis of ancient human skeletons and burial remains, severe spinal deformities appeared far less frequently than they do today.
In many ways, scoliosis is a relatively “young” modern disease.
Recent observations from Zhengfu Training combined with spinal research data from Europe and North America suggest a clear pattern:
the more urbanized, densely populated, indoor-oriented, and artificially stimulated a society becomes,
the higher the prevalence of scoliosis.
By contrast, regions with greater exposure to sunlight, outdoor activity, natural terrain, and less industrialized lifestyles often show significantly lower rates.
The root problem is not merely that “the bones became misaligned.”
It is that the central nervous system, under chronic mental stress and environmental overload, begins sending asymmetrical tension signals to the muscles surrounding the spine.
Over time, one side becomes excessively tight, the other side inhibited or weakened — and the spine is gradually pulled away from its natural centerline.
Neurological experiments in the West once demonstrated this dramatically.
When researchers removed the pineal glands of growing animals — disrupting sensory calibration and eliminating melatonin production — nearly all subjects developed spinal deformities during growth.
Melatonin is not only a sleep hormone.
It also plays an important role in regulating balance, orientation, vestibular processing, and left-right coordination through the brain’s vestibular and diencephalic systems.
Modern society bombards humans with artificial light from every direction.
The “city that never sleeps,” excessive screen exposure, academic pressure, emotional stress, and chronic nervous system activation severely suppress melatonin production in adolescents.
The result?
The nervous system gradually loses its ability to regulate symmetrical muscular tension along the spine.
This is why many modern teenagers with scoliosis also display delayed vestibular development, poor balance control, and impaired proprioception — the brain’s ability to perceive the body in space.
Children in less industrialized environments still run on uneven terrain, climb, jump, and constantly challenge their balance systems.
Their vestibular and sensory networks receive deep neurological stimulation.
Modern children, however, spend years staring at flat two-dimensional screens within static visual environments.
Their eyes rarely shift between near and far distances naturally, and their three-dimensional balance systems become under-stimulated.
So when rapid skeletal growth occurs during puberty,
the nervous system can no longer maintain the spine’s structural centerline effectively.
Modern civilization has locked people into chairs, cubicles, artificial lighting, and chronic psychological stress — draining away the body’s innate self-regulation capacity.
The human body evolved as a wild organism built for movement — running, climbing, balancing, adapting.
But modern civilization has trapped that ancient biological system inside a high-pressure artificial environment.
Scoliosis may not simply be a spinal condition.
It may be one of the clearest signs that the human body is struggling to adapt to the conditions of modern civilization itself.
《演弱病-脊椎侧弯》
侧弯是身体不适应环境的一种代偿表现。
美国哈佛大学教授丹尼尔·利伯曼(Daniel Lieberman)做过一项研究,通过对数百上千年前人类的人类骨骼、墓葬遗骸的形态学以及影像分析,在工业化未发生前的人类脊椎侧弯是极其罕见的。
实际上侧弯在人类史上是一个非常年轻的“现代病”,在近几年整复训练结合欧美的脊椎研究数据发现,越是城市化高密集、室内生活时间长的地区,脊柱侧弯的患病率显著高于阳光充足、崇尚户外自然的低纬度或欠发达地区。
脊柱侧弯根本不是单纯的“骨头歪了”,它是由中枢神经系统在大脑高压和现代环境刺激下,向脊柱肌肉发出了错误的非对称信号导致的。
欧美国家曾做过一个实验,一群神经学家通过切除动物的松果体,使其感统无法正常校准以及无法分泌褪黑素(Melatonin),结果: 100%的实验动物在成长过程中无一例外地发展出了典型的脊椎畸形。
而在人类社会中,人造光源对松果体的影响可以说是全方位无死角的,褪黑素不仅管理睡眠,它还通过大脑前庭系统和间脑调控身体的左右对称平衡感知。
现代社会的“不夜城”环境和学业精神高压,严重抑制了青少年的褪黑素分泌,直接导致中枢神经对脊柱两侧肌肉的张力调控失衡。一侧紧,一侧松,脊柱就被“拉歪”了。
现代青少年的侧弯人群普遍存在前庭功能(平衡感)和本体感觉(感知身体在空间中位置的能力)的发育延迟。
我曾在西安居住时就住在西安的“大唐不夜城”附近,10年时间里我对周围居住的邻居调查发现,越是靠近不夜城区域的民众越是抑郁、疼痛、脊椎体态变形发生率高于其他区域。
相比较于落后欠发达地区的孩子在不平整的土地上奔跑、平衡身体,前庭神经得到深度刺激。
现代孩子长期面对二维屏幕,处于静态视觉环境中,视力调焦无法有效进行长远切换,大脑的立体平衡神经网络由于缺乏刺激而退化,最终无法在青春期骨骼快速生长时,维持脊柱的精准中线。
社会进步把大家锁在了椅子上跟格子间,用高强度的精神压力抽干了他们的自我调节能力。
人类的身体本是充满野性的渴望奔跑?攀爬跳跃的远古躯壳,而现代文明把人类锁死在了高压温室里,侧弯只是现代文明演进中身体不适应高度文明的演弱病。
