Meaning of the colour of each belt
White represents purity — a birth and a new beginning. The student will relearn how to live life in a harmonious way. She clears all her previous negative knowledge and learns to accept what is presented to her during the early journey of TaeKwon-Do.
Yellow represents the earth — the foundation. After being exposed of the Art in its early stage, the student learns about the foundation of the nature and life. It prompts her pondering how to recognize and respect this foundation. It is the first step of identifying and developing the student’s characteristics.
Green represents the sprouts, plants and trees — the growth in nature. It is metaphorically our general growth in life. The student further develops her techniques, learns how to relate them to the earth. She learns what the green in nature is essential to life and how to live harmoniously with the green.
Blue represents the heaven and the sky, including the sun, the moon and the stars — nature and the metaphysical aspects in life. It also represents water and its natural flow. The student learns about the nature’s sacrifice and what these natural elements provides human life. She will continue to grow as she progresses her training and feels closer to the heavens.
Red represents caution — a sign of danger and awareness. As the student gets knowledge and becomes technically advanced, she needs to be more cautious. Self-control is a key characteristic at this level, both at a physical and mental level. She will advance only if she can perfect control of the mind and the body.
Black represents fear, heaviness and darkness — a beginning of true mastery of the self. The student now has become more mature and more grounded in her character and spirit. She is now at a level beyond others and therefore inevitably need to respect others placing others above herself. She begins to teach and improves as an instructor, continuing to simultaneously as a student and as a teacher and undergoing the process of self-growth, enlightenment and acquiring knowledge. The student gains the keen ability to move confidently and fearlessly in the dark, as well as the ability to overcome negative and destructive emotions in herself and in others. She will work tirelessly in moving onto a master level.
From white to red belt (black stripe) the student enters a phase of discovery as a follower, lowering herself to the ground to learn to respect all others. At the lowest point she perfects modesty and respect before advancing to black belt first degree. Here she returns to a beginner with the difference that she is full of confidence, knowledge and techniques. Once a black belt 1st dan, the student can finally ascend to the pinnacle, 9th dan, where she has become the mentor and influencer to many of her students, yet on an individual level continues to learn and discovers new knowledge and wisdom in her endless learning process.
