Intro to Fencing (Part 2): Introduction to Épée

The MMU fencing club only fences with the Épée blade. The rules in Epee fencing are relatively simple in comparison to the other types of blades. In Epee the entire body is the target area as highlighted by the picture above. It only takes 750g of force to score a point to bring you closer to victory.

Intro to Fencing 🤺 (Part 1): Get to know the gears

This is an example of full fencing set a fencer is expected to have and each piece of equipment comes with its own purpose.

Fencing bag: To store all necessary equipment of the athlete.

Epee Mask/Jacket/Breeches/Socks: Provides a safe target area for the opponent to score points on. One of the reasons it is traditionally colored white is due to the fact that in the past fencers used red chalk to see if a point is scored.

Plastron: This piece of equipment is worn on the inside underneath the Jacket and its purpose is to soften the pokes so that the fencer won't be injured.

Epee with pistol grip: The sword or blade in the picture is the Epee and its purpose is to score hits and points by way of thrusting or poking or touching with a minimum force of 750g against the opponent.

Epee Bodywire: The body wire is attached to the blade and goes into the jacket and out to the back to be attached to the fencing scoreboard which is used to keep track of the fencers.

We are the MMU Fencing Club 🤺

Fencing is a:

👉🏻 Enjoyed by people of any age.

👉🏻 Offers a multitude of benefits, such as a physical and a mental workout.

👉🏻 Able to learn to hone their strategies against opponents of varying skill levels, and build up physical endurance, agility, and accuracy.

👉🏻 Build up confidence and sportsmanship via participation in fencing which extends throughout other areas of life.

👉🏻 Fencing can be picked up as a youth or an adult, for fun, for fitness, or to train to compete.

👉🏻 The best of all are the friends you’ll make along the way.
