Did you know that there's an old fort and museum just across the water from the Kuala Kedah ferry terminal? Kuala Kedah Fort (aka Fort Kuala Bahang) has seen a lot of history since its original completion in the 1600s.
The fort was initially built to help fight off the Ache Sultanate, who at the time had been destroying pepper plantations in Langkawi in order to take over the region’s pepper industry. The Ache Armada finally attacked the fort in 1619 and purportedly took around 7000 prisoners; including Sultan Sulaiman Shah II!
The museum offers lots of information and visuals that paint a vivid picture of the fort's importance over the years. A must visit for history buffs, Muzium Kota Kuala Kedah is open daily, and entry is free.
