🏹 HAVE YOU TRIED PANKAS? 🏹

HDH Archery Malaysia is pleased to receive the official PANKAS Rulebook from the game's creator, Yeop Mahidin.

PANKAS is a uniquely Malaysian traditional archery game that combines skill, strategy, excitement, and spectator engagement. Unlike many archery formats where only archers fully understand the action, PANKAS is easy for spectators to follow, making every shot meaningful and every round exciting.

More importantly, PANKAS reflects many of the values that HDH promotes:

✅ Traditional archery skills
✅ Historical identity and culture
✅ Traditional attire and equipment
✅ Inclusivity for archers of different backgrounds
✅ Fun, competitive, and spectator-friendly gameplay

Many HDH archers may be surprised to discover that skills developed through HDH competition formats translate very well into PANKAS. In fact, world champion Aira Imani is among those who excel in both HDH competition and PANKAS, proving that traditional games and high-level competition complement each other.

As part of our efforts to promote traditional archery culture across ASEAN, PANKAS will be featured as an Exhibition Championship during the HDH ASEAN Historical Archery Championships 2026, taking place from 16–21 November 2026 at Taman Rimba Kiara, Kuala Lumpur.

We encourage all HDH Archery Malaysia members, clubs, and followers to download the rulebook, learn the format, organise local games, and experience for yourselves why PANKAS is becoming one of Malaysia's most exciting traditional archery sports.

Let's preserve our heritage, celebrate our traditions, and share them with the world.

🏹 Learn it.
🏹 Play it.
🏹 Promote it.

See you at HDH ASEAN 2026!

🏹 PANKAS TO TAKE THE ASEAN STAGE! 🏹

A significant milestone for traditional archery was achieved when Yeop Mahidin, creator of the traditional archery game PANKAS, officially presented the PANGKAS Rulebook to Anuar Matsaat, Vice President of HDH International Archery Association (HDH-IAA).

During the presentation, Anuar announced that Pankas will be featured as an Exhibition Championship at the HDH ASEAN Historical Archery Championships 2026, to be held from **16–21 November 2026 at Taman Rimba Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia**. The championship will gather traditional and historical archers from across ASEAN and beyond, providing an exciting opportunity for international participants to experience and compete in this uniquely Malaysian traditional archery game.

Pangkas stands out as one of the few spectator-friendly archery sports where audiences can easily follow the action, making it highly engaging for both participants and spectators alike. More importantly, it embodies the core values of HDH by being truly inclusive, welcoming archers of all backgrounds, ages, and skill levels.

The game's appeal is further demonstrated by athletes such as Aira Imani, a world champion who not only excels in international HDH competition formats but is also a formidable pankas player. Her success demonstrates that excellence in traditional games and international historical archery competition can go hand in hand.

What makes pankas especially meaningful is its commitment to preserving and celebrating historical archery identity. Traditional attire, traditional equipment, ceremonial horns, gongs, and cultural elements remain an integral part of the game, ensuring that heritage and sport continue to move forward together.

The inclusion of pankas at the HDH ASEAN Historical Archery Championships 2026 represents an important step in introducing this exciting traditional archery sport to the international community while showcasing Malaysia's rich archery heritage. Visitors and participants will not only witness competitive archery but also experience a living tradition where culture, history, and sport are inseparable.

Congratulations to Yeop Mahidin and all those who have contributed to the development, preservation, and promotion of Pankas. We look forward to welcoming archers from across ASEAN and the world to Kuala Lumpur this November.

🏹 Tradition. Culture. Competition. Community.

PANAAN GAMES 2026: TAWI-TAWI HISTORICAL ARCHERY FESTIVAL - Strengthening ASEAN Unity Through Heritage Sport and Cultural Diplomacy

Bongao, Tawi-Tawi | 3 May 2026 — The PANAAN Games 2026: Tawi-Tawi Historical Archery Festival concluded successfully in Bongao, marking a significant milestone in the advancement of Historical Archery as a unifying heritage sport within the ASEAN region. The event brought together international archers, cultural custodians, and sports administrators from Tawi-Tawi , Manila , Malaysia, and the United Kingdom in a shared celebration of tradition, identity, and cross-cultural friendship.

Organised by the Provincial Government of Tawi-Tawi through the Provincial Sports and Development Office under the leadership of Hon. Zayeed Aimeer M. Matba, in collaboration with Tawi-Tawi Archers and international partners, the festival reflected a growing regional commitment to strengthening ASEAN solidarity through traditional sport. The initiative, an effort by archers from Tanah Bangsawan and HDH Archery Malaysia, further reinforced the shared mission of developing Historical Archery as a structured and culturally grounded discipline across ASEAN.

Central to the philosophy of the event is the KAPA initiative (Keluarga Angkat Pemanah ASEAN), a collaborative framework championed by Malaysia and the Philippines to foster “family-based” ties among ASEAN archers. This initiative continues to strengthen athlete development pathways, cultural exchange, and long-term regional cooperation, positioning Historical Archery not only as a competitive discipline but also as a living expression of ASEAN unity. Both Malaysia and the Philippines reaffirmed their strong commitment to expanding KAPA as a foundational pillar of regional sports diplomacy.

Competition Day 2 featured long-distance Historical Archery disciplines ranging from 40 metres to 140 metres, where athletes demonstrated exceptional levels of technical precision, endurance, discipline, and sportsmanship. Beyond competition results, the festival served as a cultural platform celebrating the warrior heritage of the region, while reinforcing shared values that connect ASEAN communities through sport and tradition.

The championship results highlighted outstanding performances across all divisions. Robert Martinez was crowned Men’s Champion, while Norlaila Ramli (Malaysia) secured the Women’s Champion title. Mujibar Martinez was named Scout Champion, and Anisya Fatehah Ahmad Faizan (Malaysia) claimed the Junior Champion title.

In the Grand Championship standings, Robert Martinez secured 1st place, followed by Mulpikal Abilul in 2nd place, and Alquabid Hassan in 3rd place, reflecting a highly competitive field and the rising standard of ASEAN Historical Archery athletes.

Special awards were also presented to recognise excellence beyond scoring performance. These included the Speed Record Award presented to Nidzar, Robert Martinez, and Shazar; the Sharpshooter Award awarded to Robert Martinez; the Attire Award (by public vote) awarded to Drew Chumutan; and the MTB Champion title awarded to Mohd Ayub bin Kamidi (Malaysia).

These recognitions underscored the festival’s holistic appreciation of athletic skill, cultural expression, and versatility in historical sport.

In a key regional development announcement, HDH Archery Malaysia and HDH – International Archery Association confirmed that the Philippines has been allocated three official quota places for the ASEAN Historical Archery Championships, scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 16 to 21 November 2026. This allocation reflects the continued commitment to equitable ASEAN representation and structured competitive development among member nations.

The three qualified athletes representing the Philippines will be Robert Martinez, Mulpikal Abilul, and Alquabid Hassan. These athletes will form part of the official Philippine contingent competing at the ASEAN level, further strengthening the country’s presence in the regional Historical Archery arena.

Further strengthening ASEAN leadership in the sport, Hikmatyar Idjilani has been formally recognised as the ASEAN Ambassador for Historical Archery from the Philippines. This appointment underscores the continued development of structured leadership, cultural representation, and international engagement within the ASEAN Historical Archery movement.

HDH Archery Malaysia and HDH – International Archery Association extend their sincere appreciation to all key stakeholders whose support ensured the successful delivery of the event, including His Excellency Hon. Governor Yshmael “Mang” I. Sali of the Province of Tawi-Tawi, Her Excellency First Lady Hja. Jumda Sali, Hon. Vice Governor Al-syed A. Sali, Hon. Mayor Jasper Que, Hon. Vice Mayor Jimuel Que, and Principal Nur Tidal.

The PANAAN Games 2026 stands as a strong testament to the role of Historical Archery in advancing ASEAN unity through heritage sport. By strengthening cultural identity while building structured regional cooperation, the event continues to position archery as a powerful bridge between nations, communities, and generations across Southeast Asia.

“The PANAAN Games 2026 stands as a meaningful expression of unity through heritage sport. Historical Archery continues to serve as a bridge between cultures, preserving tradition while strengthening friendship among communities across ASEAN and beyond,” said Anuar Matsaat, Vice President of HDH-IAA.

Way of the Bow Festival 2026 Concludes in Kerala, Reaffirming India’s Living Martial and Archery Traditions

Nedumangad (Kerala) | February 1, 2026

The Way of the Bow Festival 2026, a three-day cultural gathering dedicated to Indian traditional archery (Dhanurvidya), martial arts, and indigenous knowledge systems, concluded at Prakritheeyam, Nedumangad, marking a significant milestone in the revival of India’s living martial traditions.

Envisioned as an annual festival, Way of the Bow brings together Indovedic archery traditions, tribal archery practices, and Indian martial arts, positioning archery not merely as a sport but as a holistic cultural discipline rooted in ecology, ethics, and lineage-based knowledge.

A two-day workshop on Dhanurveda and its application in Dhanurvidya was conducted by Jasminder Pal Singh, President of the Indovedic Traditional Archery Association. Sessions on international archery rules were led by Anuar Matsaat, Historical Archery Association – International Archery Association ( HDH-IAA Historical Archery Observer) , while field safety protocols were addressed by Fawaz Mukhri. Talks on the impact of Dhanurvidya on personality development were delivered by Anantha M. A. and V. Balakrishnan.

The festival also featured a Kalari workshop and performance led by Mahesh Gurukkal of Agasthyam Kalari, with demonstrations by his students highlighting Kerala’s martial lineage. Martial knowledge sessions on Mudgar Vidya and Shank Vidya were presented by Adv. Sandeep Vijay Nair.

Cultural performances included a tribal dance staged by students of the Dr. Ambedkar Memorial Residential Higher Secondary School, Kattela, and a live performance by Brown Sugar, joined by musicians John, Sachin, and Ben, creating a vibrant confluence of tradition and contemporary expression.

Traditional archery competitions were conducted across Historical / Traditional Bow (Adult & Kids), Indian Round / Hunting Bow (Kids), and a Stone Pellet Bow category for tribal participants.

Tournament Results (with scores)
Historical Bow – Adult: Jigmat Lotus (180), V. Balakrishnan (159), Fawaz Mukhri (129)
Historical Bow – Mini: Aira Imani (206), Nia Imanina (182), Ammar Lutfan (169)
Indian Round / Hunting Bow – Mini: Mohammad Rayan (80), Anikha (50), Zayan R. S. (38)

A total cash prize of ₹50,000, instituted by Dalpatpur Awards, was awarded across categories, including ₹10,000 presented to the Kaani tribal winner.

The festival was powered by Muthoot Finance, with support from Agasthyam Kalari and allied cultural partners, underscoring the role of responsible patronage in sustaining traditional knowledge systems.

With strong participation from practitioners, students, and the public, organisers confirmed that Way of the Bow will now be held every year, travelling across regions to continue building dialogue between India’s martial, Indovedic, and tribal archery traditions.
