We create impact by partnering with local communities, government agencies and the private sector to protect and conserve marine ecosystems. Malaysia is part of the “Coral Triangle”, the area of the world’s oceans recognized by scientists as having the highest biodiversity. Coral reefs therefore represent an economically important ecosystem and are the foundation of a significant percentage of the

country’s tourist industry. Over 350 species of hard coral have been identified in Malaysian waters. However, a lack of comprehensive management programmes is leading to degradation of this important economic resource. This situation is exacerbated by inadequate information on the status and location of the reefs, further hindering management efforts. In 2001, Reef Check Foundation appointed a National Coordinator for Malaysia, to promote Reef Check and carry out training and surveys. While there were some successes, lack of funding and support prevented the coordinator from having a major impact on marine conservation in Malaysia. In 2006, the British Government provided funding for a one year project to establish a more sustainable Reef Check programme in Malaysia. That project culminated with the registration of Reef Check Malaysia Bhd as a non-profit company in August 2007.

We've shared with the Pulau Aur community that glass bottles aren't just waste.

Now, we're showing them that glass bottles can be repurposed as part of the preparation for coral rehabilitation structures.

Together with volunteers and the local community, these bottles are given a new purpose before being transported to the rehabilitation site.

What may look ordinary in our hands today could become a new home for marine life tomorrow!

200.65kg of trash removed by 64 volunteers on one shared mission!

A big thank you to our ICC sponsor, .nv for leading a successful cleanup at Pantai Bagan Lalang. Spearheaded by Ms. Mackellar Violich, Global Sustainability Manager, who joined all the way from the United States, the team collected 200.65kg of marine debris from our coastline.

Among the most common items found were:
🔹 330 plastic grocery bags
🔹 318 plastic beverage bottles
🔹 131 plastic and foam pieces

Every item removed is a step towards healthier oceans and cleaner beaches. Thank you for your leadership, commitment, and support in making a positive impact for our environment. 💙🌊

Happy World Ocean Day! 🌊

The ocean connects us all. It gives us oxygen, regulates our climate, and sustains life on Earth.

Today, let's reimagine our relationship with the ocean, not as something far away, but as something we're deeply connected to. Every action matters, from reducing waste to supporting conservation efforts.

The time to act is now. Together, we can protect the ocean and the future it supports.

1,318 COTs removed!

A response team comprising CMCGs from Selakan, Larapan, Mabul, and Kunak was deployed to Tabawan and Adal Islands in response to reported outbreaks of Crown-of-Thorns Starfish (COTs).

A total of 742 COTs were removed from Tabawan, while 576 COTs were removed from Adal Island. Most of the COTs at Tabawan were found at depths of 18–20 metres, as many of the shallow reefs had already been severely impacted by previous outbreaks. In contrast, most of the COTs at Adal Island were found at depths of 1–10 metres.

Continued monitoring and periodic surveys are still needed, particularly around Tabawan, Silumpat, Bakungan, and Adal, to assess the situation and detect any further outbreaks.

While the work is far from over, these efforts are an important step towards protecting and giving our reefs a chance to recover. 🌊💙
