POSTURE SERIES Β· PART 2 OF 3 π«
Last time: the hunch changes your breathing. This time: that shallow breathing doesn't stop at your chest. π€
Quick recap π
Screen time overworks one shoulder muscle β the muscles that should support posture go quiet β shoulders and head drift forward β the upper back rounds β the rib cage compresses β breathing gets shorter and shallower.
That's where Part 1 left off. Here's why that last step matters more than it seems.
The body is connected in more ways than most people realise.
One important nerve pathway runs from the base of the brain, down through the neck and chest, passing close to the diaphragm on its way to the organs below.
When the rib cage is compressed and the diaphragm can't move freely, tension along this pathway can change too.
This is one of several ways posture and breathing connect to the rest of the body β not a fixed rule for every symptom.
Some people notice other things alongside poor posture too.
Digestive discomfort, fatigue, or tension headaches are sometimes reported alongside long periods of hunched sitting.
These are general observations, not a diagnosis. If you're experiencing numbness, tingling, or persistent symptoms, that's worth having assessed by a practitioner rather than self-managed.
Simple ways to counter the hunch, starting at your desk π
β¦ Diaphragmatic breathing β hand on belly, breathe so it rises before your chest does
β¦ Open-arm stretch β arms wide, gentle chest opening, a few slow breaths
β¦ Foam roller stretch β lying along a roller lengthwise lets the chest open passively
β¦ Wall angels β back against a wall, arms sliding up and down in a W shape
Where we fit in π
At FFM, we assess your posture and breathing pattern together, not just the areas that feel tight. Part of our approach includes manual techniques that help the rib cage and diaphragm move more freely, alongside chiropractic care and foundational core work.
Our role is to help your breathing mechanics work the way they're meant to.
Part 3 next β why doing a little, consistently, works better than doing a lot occasionally. Save this series for when you need it. π
