Massage guns, instant relief, sciatica gone in 30 seconds… sounds tempting right?

A lot of people see videos online showing quick fixes for sciatic pain and wonder if a massage gun is the answer. Sometimes it feels better immediately, but does that actually mean the problem is solved?

In this reel, our physio explains when a massage gun might help, when it may not be appropriate, and what people often misunderstand about sciatica pain.

‘Do you guys do massage here?’

Technically… yes.
But also… not really

We’re physiotherapists, not masseurs.
There’s a big difference between relaxing muscles for comfort vs treating the actual cause of pain, tightness, or injury.

Treatment isn’t just ‘press here pain gone’.
There’s assessment, clinical reasoning, rehab, movement correction, and long-term recovery involved too.

‘Do physios ever think weird things during treatment?’

One thing Malcolm will NEVER do as a physiotherapist — cross professional boundaries.

No matter the treatment, the environment, or the patient, professionalism always comes first. Respect, safety, and trust are non-negotiable in healthcare.

At the end of the day, you’re not just coming in with pain or injuries. You’re putting your trust in us and we take that seriously.

‘I have a bulging disc… does that mean surgery is unavoidable?’ 😟

Hearing words like slipped disc, disc bulge, or herniated disc can sound scary and many people immediately assume the condition will only get worse over time.

But is that really true?

In this reel, our physio explains what a bulging disc actually means, whether surgery is always necessary, and what factors really matter when it comes to recovery and treatment.

Things patients say that make physios internally panic 💀

‘Can I just do massage?’
‘Exercises at home ah… really need?’
‘Can you just crack it and fix everything?’

We love our patients.
But some questions deserve an immediate NO 😂

‘I can treat everything.’
That’s probably the biggest red flag in healthcare. 🚩

After practising for more than 5 years, one thing Malcolm will NEVER do is take on a case he’s not confident managing and vestibular rehab is one of them.

Not because the patient isn’t important.
But because they deserve the BEST care possible.

Sometimes, helping a patient means referring them to someone more experienced in that area — and we’re completely okay with that.

Being honest about our limitations isn’t weakness. It’s professionalism.

Watch the reel to hear Malcolm explain it himself.

That sudden pop in your calf during a game?
A lot of people brush it off as ‘just a cramp’ and try to walk it out… until the pain gets worse the next day.

Whether it happened during a sprint, lunge, jump, or quick direction change on the pickleball court, that sharp sensation can sometimes point to something more serious than simple muscle tightness.

So… what should you actually do right after it happens? And what should you avoid doing?

Our physio breaks it down in this reel.

Physio: “What brings you in today?”
Patient: “My shoulder hurts when I do this—”
(demonstrates the movement with maximum intensity)

Physio internally:
“Please don’t make it worse in front of me.”

“Just stretch more.”
That’s probably one of the most common advice people hear for pain or tightness. But after practising as a physiotherapist for more than 5 years… stretching is NOT the first thing I focus on. 👀

Why? Because tight muscles are often a symptom, not the root cause.

If your body feels “tight”, there’s usually a reason behind it:
❌ Weakness
❌ Poor load management
❌ Joint stiffness
❌ Compensation patterns
❌ Overworked muscles trying to protect you

Stretching may give temporary relief, but if we don’t address the actual problem, the tightness keeps coming back.

That’s why treatment should go beyond just pulling on a muscle. The goal is to help your body move and function better long term, not just feel good for 5 minutes.
